Five of Trump's six tech medalists come from companies whose shares he traded as recently as July
Donald Trump is giving the National Medal of Science to Musk, Brin, Huang and Su and the technology medal to Dell and Nadella on Thursday. CNBC reported that all six have funded Trump or Republican causes, and his latest disclosure shows trades in companies tied to five of them.
The Investor · Invest desk
What happened
- Crypto Briefing reported that Trump has never before personally presented these two medals, in either of his terms.
- Michael Dell and his wife Susan committed $6.25 billion to seed Trump Accounts, the largest sum CNBC tied to any of the six honorees.
- The event will highlight a plan to overhaul how federal research funding is managed and distributed, which Michael Kratsios first released in July.
Why it matters
- Who's exposed exposure Any federal decision on AI or research money that moves Nvidia, AMD, Microsoft, Alphabet or Tesla now lands on companies whose shares the president has traded, with their leaders honoured beside him.
- What it limits constraint Honouring the heads of Nvidia and AMD shortly after the AI lunch leaves the administration less room to support a slowdown in model development without contradicting its own medal list.
- What it sets up precedent Putting the 1959 science medal in chip and software executives' hands makes private companies the expected partner in the research-funding overhaul, ahead of universities and federal labs.

Musk, Nadella and Altman answer Trump's 'super intelligence' push in three different waysConfirmed3 publishers
The cash in this story runs toward the White House. Musk was Trump's biggest financial backer of the 2024 cycle, at more than $290 million [10]. Nvidia gave $1 million to the inauguration and Huang donated to the fund for Trump's ballroom [6], while Brin gave hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Republican National Committee in 2025 [5], according to CNBC. AMD is also contributing to Trump funds, CNBC reported [13]. Dell's $6.25 billion pledge [7] is roughly 21 times Musk's campaign money [19], though it seeds children's savings accounts and does not go to a campaign.
Crypto Briefing wrote, "The roster reads like the top holdings of a tech index fund." [16] The president's own account is a closer match. CNBC reported that his most recent disclosure shows he bought or sold shares in SpaceX, Tesla, Nvidia, Microsoft, AMD and Alphabet as recently as July [17]. The six honorees are tied to seven companies, and six of those are on that list [20]. Dell Technologies, whose chief executive made the largest pledge, is the one CNBC did not name [20]. CNBC did not report the size or direction of the trades.
The medals come with a policy attached. Crypto Briefing reported that the administration will use the Science: A New Golden Age Summit [3] to push for more private-sector investment in scientific work alongside federal research funding [9]. The same outlet pointed out where each company sits in AI: Nvidia and AMD build the processors AI runs on, Microsoft and Google are central to the contest over AI software, and Dell sells data-center hardware [15]. The National Medal of Science dates to 1959 [11], and the National Science Foundation calls it the nation's highest honor for scientists and engineers [12]. Giving it to chip and software executives fits a policy that wants more private money in research. "These recipients are helping ensure America keeps leading the world in innovation," Liz Huston, a White House assistant press secretary, said in an emailed statement [14].
If the summit is only ceremony, no money moves and shareholders of these companies gain nothing from it. If the funding overhaul [8] steers federal research dollars toward private partners, these companies are the obvious counterparties. The third case is about the pace of AI, and I think it carries the most weight. Trump said he signed a "morally binding" document with tech leaders as calls to slow AI development reached a fever pitch, CNBC reported [18]. A little over a week later, the chief executives of Nvidia and AMD are taking the country's top science medal [1].
An administration that has just put those two on its highest science honour will find it harder to back a federal slowdown on model development. That view is wrong if the document turns out to commit the companies to limits on model development, or if the overhaul sends most of its money to universities and federal labs.
What to watch
- Whether the Kratsios research-funding overhaul routes grants or contracts toward partnerships with Nvidia, AMD, Microsoft, Alphabet or Dell.
- The text of the "morally binding" AI document, and whether it commits the companies to any limits on model development.
- Trump's next financial disclosure, and whether trades in the honorees' companies continue after the October 8 ceremony.
