Secret Service confiscated a Politico reporter's White House pass at the gate
Trump posted the ban on Friday, and by Saturday morning CNN, MS NOW and Politico reporters were being turned away from the White House grounds. Politico says the Secret Service kept its reporter's pass.

What happened
- Trump posted on Truth Social that, effective immediately, he was banning CNN, MSNOW and Politico from the White House over their reporting, and said other media outlets were to follow.
- All three outlets were turned away from the White House on Saturday morning, the day after the post, according to NPR.
- Politico reported that many senior White House staff were surprised by the directive and that it was issued while chief of staff Susie Wiles was out of town.
- Trump, asked about the move in the Oval Office, said he was "banning the free press," Techdirt reported.
- Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Friday that he fully supports the ban on the three outlets.
Why it matters
- What it limits constraint Any coverage plan that assumed a credentialed reporter on the grounds now needs a same-day substitute, because a pass can be collected at a guard post long before any of this reaches a judge.
- What it costs cost The three newsrooms pay twice while the argument runs: legal fees, and the reporting they cannot do from inside the fence.
- Who's exposed exposure Every other outlet holding a White House credential is now working from a list it does not write, since the post promised more names.
- What it sets up precedent With the Pentagon already closed to these outlets and its secretary endorsing the White House ban, department-level exclusion becomes an ordinary tool for the rest of the cabinet.

A ban announced online and a pass taken at a checkpoint are two different objects, and only one of them changes what a reporter can do on Monday. "Secret Service denied her entry to the complex and confiscated the pass that allows her access to the White House," Politico global editor in chief Jonathan Greenberger said of reporter Cheyenne Haslett [7]. Techdirt wrote that the ban was announced with no due process [4].
For a White House bureau, the pass has been something you could count on. It gets issued, the reporter shows up, the plan for the day assumes a body on the grounds. Saturday showed it can be taken away overnight. What stopped it before was internal persuasion: The Verge reports that Trump has been talked down from this kind of sweeping move before [19].
The reason given in the post is a payment. It calls Politico the recipient of "an illegal and ridiculous $8 Million Dollar subscription" paid by the federal government under Joe Biden [17]. Techdirt says the figure is a misreading of subscriptions taken out by many different individuals and agencies across the government [18].
On how long access stays gone, the record holds two entries. Trump revoked CNN reporter Jim Acosta's credentials in his first term and CNN won them back in court [5]. He barred AP reporters from the White House and Air Force One in 2025, the AP sued, and that case is still in litigation [9]. One of those fights ended with the credentials back, and the other has not ended [16]. CNN called the ban "an illegal assault on this fundamental right" [14], and MS NOW said it "intends to take any and all steps necessary to defend our First Amendment rights" [15]. The Verge expects all three to challenge the measure and writes that they will likely win, while saying that would not erase "the distraction, cost, and chaos" it causes [6].
Some work needs a body inside the fence, and that is exactly what a guard can take away at a checkpoint [7]. Some work needs an official to return a call, and an official can pick up for a reporter who has no pass. Both can be closed at once: The Verge reports that the Department of Defense has pushed reporters out of the Pentagon [12], and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said "we are grateful these outlets already chose to self-deport from the Pentagon" [11].
What to watch
- Whether any court orders the three passes restored while the case is argued, rather than after it.
- Which outlets get added to the list, given the post's line that other media outlets are to follow.
- Whether the AP's unresolved 2025 suit produces a ruling that reaches this ban.
