SpaceX capped Starlink speed on Ukraine's drones overnight, a Zelenskyy adviser says
SpaceX imposed a speed limit on Starlink terminals mounted on Ukrainian drones overnight, Zelenskyy adviser Serhii Beskrestnov said Wednesday. SpaceX and the White House did not immediately comment, so the political motive he alleges rests on his word alone.

What happened
- Ukrainian officials said the limit disrupted drone operations and left slower-flying attack drones easier targets for Russian defenses.
- Zelenskyy said Ukraine did not get the usual advance warning from Western partners about Russian ballistic missiles, and he did not say which partners.
- On Saturday Trump said Ukraine should have a new president, implying Zelenskyy has done too little to bring the war to an end.
Why it matters
- Who's exposed exposure Any further change to Starlink service in Ukraine will be read as US policy before SpaceX explains it, because Ukrainian officials already link the two.
- Who has to decide decision Ukraine has to decide how much strike, air-defense and logistics traffic stays on one vendor's network, now that the vendor has shown it can change a setting overnight.
- What doesn't add up contradiction A Defense Committee lawmaker told AP, anonymously, that intelligence sharing has not stopped. That cuts against reading the Starlink limit and the missed warning as one pattern.

The speed limit and the motive are two claims, and only the first has a named person describing what happened. Beskrestnov's case for the second is one sentence. "Obviously, this action cannot be a coincidence and is connected to the current political situation," he said, without elaborating [6]. With SpaceX and the White House silent for now [7], he is the only source on why.
The intelligence complaint gives the motive thesis less support than it first appears to, and the people best placed to know dispute it. Trump has said the U.S. has not stopped sharing intelligence with Ukraine [9]. Air force spokesman Yurii Ihnat said there was no warning of the initial ballistic missile attack on Tuesday night, though Kyiv was warned about three later waves [11]. On that count three of the four waves, or 75%, came with warning [12]. The one miss is still unexplained. Three in four is hard to read as a cutoff.
The report does show risk concentrated in a single supplier. Beskrestnov says the same network carries long-range drone missions, interceptor air-defense systems and front-line logistics [3]. The report does not include what speed the limit set, how many terminals it touched, or whether the interceptor and logistics links were affected.
We think the concentration is established and the motive is not. The dependency holds whatever SpaceX's reason was: a company that can change a setting overnight can degrade every function that runs on its terminals. The motive claim would fall if SpaceX showed the limit applied to drone-mounted terminals generally, and it stays unproven if the limit is lifted without explanation. SpaceX has not described a decision made for its own reasons, though that is the obvious alternative.
What to watch
- Whether SpaceX comments, lifts the limit, or says it applies to drone-mounted terminals generally and not only Ukraine's.
- Whether Kyiv names the Western partners that did not warn of the initial ballistic missile attack, and whether any later wave arrives unannounced.
