Workday ships Agent Harness as generally available, billed on Flex Credits

Workday made Sana Home the starting point for work and put Agent Harness into general availability, with both priced on Flex Credits. Agents built on it run in isolated environments over finance and HR data, Constellation Research reported.

Agents built outside Workday can reach its data How Agent Harness reaches third-party agents, developers and Sana Enterprise customers, as Constellation Research and Workday describe it.

Three groups: third-party agents run outside Agent Harness but access data over model context protocol with governance; developers build custom agents with Developer Agent, Google ADK or TypeScript; Sana Enterprise customers get Sana Principal Agent orchestration.

What happened

  • Developers can build custom agents with Workday's Developer Agent or with frameworks such as Google ADK and TypeScript.
  • Sana Principal Agent orchestrates across agents and apps only for customers who have Sana Enterprise.
  • Talent Acquisition Agent, the first named ambient agent, is due to be generally available in the first quarter of 2027.

Why it matters

  • What it costs cost The entry point and the agent runtime draw on the same consumption model, so usage on both sides of the platform shows up on one metered bill.
  • Who's exposed exposure Agents Workday did not build can now request HR and finance data over MCP, and the governance that limits them is Workday's own description.
  • Who has to decide decision Teams choose between building inside Harness, where the agent runs in Workday's isolated environments, and keeping agents elsewhere behind an MCP connection.

Agent Harness has two paths, and they differ in where the agent's code runs. Agents built on Harness run inside it, with context across business processes and built-in memory [3]. Agents built elsewhere stay outside and reach Workday data over model context protocol, with governance [5]. In our view that split decides where Workday's controls can attach, and a buyer should map it before choosing a path.

Constellation Research relays Workday's description of the product. Its account does not say what "isolated" means (container, tenant or network boundary), how governance is enforced on the MCP path, or what the credit meter counts.

Both Sana Home and Agent Harness are priced under Flex Credits, a consumption model [6][7]. Analyst Holger Mueller describes the packaged agents as ones that never sleep and take no days off [17]. If the meter counts activity, an agent like that is a standing line item.

Sana is the layer Workday acquired a little more than a year ago, and Sana Home puts tasks, agent activity and meetings into one personalized view [8]. Mueller said, "Workday has delivered on its goal to make Sana the entry point for all its users." [15] He added that Workday is the only vendor offering an all-purpose agentic interface to start work, not only work inside the enterprise application [16]. The "only vendor" line is one analyst's comparison. It holds only if no competing suite ships a comparable general entry point.

Workday also took steps toward ambient agents that keep memory and orchestrate workflows continually [10]. The first named one, Talent Acquisition Agent, spans Workday Recruiting, Paradox, HiredScore and skills data [11]. CEO Aneel Bhusri said during a keynote: "Chapter Four is really the founding of the company again around AI. We are a new startup. We have to act and think like a startup." [13] He also said customers will be on different paths, with Sana as the entry point and the platform offering multiple ways to use AI [14].

What to watch

  • Workday's published Flex Credits rates for Harness runs and Sana Home use, and what the meter counts.
  • Technical documentation for the isolation boundary and for governance on the MCP path.
  • Talent Acquisition Agent reaching general availability in the first quarter of 2027, and how it is priced.
