AMD clears $1 trillion market cap on record earnings and hyperscaler deals

The Nasdaq's 2.26% record close ran on Meta's Muse agent and the chipmakers it is supposed to sell more of. The commitments behind AMD's first $1 trillion valuation come from Microsoft and Anthropic.

What happened

  • The Nasdaq Composite rose 2.26% on Monday for its first record close since June, and the S&P 500 posted its best day since early August.
  • AMD closed up about 10%, crossing a $1 trillion market cap for the first time, while Intel finished 12% higher and Arm, which licenses chip designs to others, rose 17%.
  • Meta gained more than 11% as its Muse personal AI agent, released roughly two weeks earlier, leapt to the top of the app charts.
  • Amazon said on Monday it had blocked Muse from its retail storefront after trying to get Meta to exclude the store from the agent's shopping activity voluntarily.
  • Anthropic plans to deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs from the first half of 2027, in a deal Yahoo Finance reports could be worth tens of billions of dollars over time.

Why it matters

  • What doesn't add up contradiction Fortune puts Monday's chip bid on optimism that Muse will sell more semiconductors, while the Yahoo Finance case for AMD's $1 trillion rests on the June quarter and the Microsoft and Anthropic deals; the two readings price a fading app very differently.
  • What it sets up precedent Amazon has already sued Perplexity over Comet and blocked agents from Google and OpenAI, so a merchant veto on agent traffic is becoming the working default, and Meta's shopping reach gets settled store by store.
  • Who has to decide decision AMD's pledge of up to $5 billion to Anthropic puts its balance sheet behind the customer signing for 2 gigawatts, which is capital not going to capacity, acquisitions or buybacks.
  • Who's exposed exposure Meta could end up owning as much as 10% of AMD under their partnership, so the company whose app moved the chip trade is also a prospective shareholder in the chipmaker that moved most.

A 9.9% session into a $1 trillion close means AMD came into Monday worth about $910 billion, so roughly $90 billion of market value was added to one chipmaker in a day [23]. The stock is up 185% this year against 22% for Nvidia, a little over eight times the gain [5][14]. On price, the AI trade has broadened.

The buying behind it sits with a short list of names. AMD's Helios racks go into Microsoft's Azure AI services from the second half of 2026, and the Anthropic deployment starts in the first half of 2027 [11][12]. Fortune reports that Microsoft and Anthropic account for 85% of Nscale's $103 billion in total contract value, which is about $88 billion of one neocloud's book resting on two counterparties [22][25].

Four times the June quarter's $11.5 billion of revenue is $46 billion, which puts $1 trillion at about 22 times that run rate [8][24]. The quarter itself beat consensus by 3% on non-GAAP earnings, $1.66 against $1.61, and by 1.4% on revenue, $11.5 billion against roughly $11.34 billion [8][18]. The guidance is what the multiple pays for: server CPU revenue up 80% year over year in the second half, 70% in 2027, data center revenue more than doubling in 2027, and AI GPUs growing well over 100% [10]. Data center was $6.7 billion of the June quarter, 58% of revenue [9][16].

Shoppers who now point Muse at Amazon get a notice: "Continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon's Conditions of Use, to which our customers have agreed" [19]. Meta said on launch day that the agent "has no visibility into people's passwords or payment methods" and that shared credentials "go into secure storage, so Muse can use them without seeing them" [20]. Fortune's case for Muse is distribution: 3.6 billion daily active users inside Meta's own network [15].

On a day the market rose on almost all fronts, CNBC's Sean Conlon wrote that "an alarming trend not seen since 1999 was happening under the surface"; the Morning Squawk item does not say which trend [27]. In my view the $1 trillion is a price on two counterparties, with a consumer app supplying the narrative that moved the tape [2][7]. The test is specific: if the 2027 data center doubling arrives with MI450 buyers outside Microsoft and Anthropic, the broadening is real in cash and 22 times revenue is cheap; if MI450 volume stays with those two, AMD holders own a levered position on Anthropic's funding and Azure's capital spending [10][11][12].

What to watch

  • Whether Muse holds its top app chart position past its first month, and whether other retailers follow Amazon in blocking it.
  • Delivery dates: Microsoft's Helios deployment on Azure in the second half of 2026, and Anthropic's first MI450 racks in the first half of 2027.
  • Whether Meta acts on the partnership that could give it up to 10% of AMD.
