AMD brings Fei-Fei Li's World Labs in-house with an $8.2 billion stock deal

AMD is buying Fei-Fei Li's World Labs for about $8.2 billion and making Li its chief scientist. The chipmaker says workloads like the lab's will shape its chip roadmap, a claim that matters most to teams training robots in simulation.

What happened

  • The Verge reports that AMD is paying for World Labs entirely in its own stock.
  • Li will be an executive vice president reporting to CEO Lisa Su, and the World Labs team will keep its focus on AI model research.
  • World Labs said AI development requires close collaboration across model research, systems and compute.
  • The deal is expected to close before the end of the year, subject to regulatory approval.

Why it matters

  • What it costs cost AMD shareholders fund a price roughly eight times World Labs' early valuation, and part of what it buys is workload access that last year's partnership already gave AMD.
  • Who has to decide decision Robotics teams weighing AMD chips for simulation work still have to get world models from somewhere else, so the deal changes their plans only once AMD releases one.
  • What it sets up precedent Coming weeks after Nvidia agreed to buy Hugging Face for nearly $13 billion, the deal gives chipmakers a second recent example of buying the model companies they want to design around.

World Labs' product is easy to picture. A user types a prompt into Marble, which launched in 2025, and gets back an interactive 3D world [10]. The company pitches it for entertainment and for building simulated environments to train robots [11]. I think the second buyer is the one a chipmaker cares about. TechCrunch reports that useful real-world data for training general-purpose robots is scarce, and that synthetic data from world models will be key to building them [19].

"Building the compute platforms for the next generation of AI requires a deep understanding of how models are evolving," CEO Lisa Su said in a statement [7]. AMD formed an inference optimization and training partnership with World Labs last year, and the ties stayed close [14].

The purchase turns a partnership AMD already had into ownership of the research team. The price is about 8.2 times the $1 billion valuation World Labs reached within months of its 2024 founding [18], the only earlier valuation the reports cite.

AMD's own language is general. It says the deal strengthens its ability to develop "AI hardware, software and systems around the needs of emerging models and applications" [13]. That covers emerging models broadly [13]. Li put her side in terms of hardware. "To do this requires scaling our efforts, widening our reach, and getting closer to the hardware," she wrote [8].

For a robotics team buying hardware this quarter, the difference is in what each vendor has released. Nvidia has a suite of open-weight world models, Cosmos among them, while AMD has put out only text- and video-based models to the public [16]. Li wrote that the combined company would push AI forward "openly with the community and the entire ecosystem" [9].

What a team should do depends on its workload, simulated 3D environments of the kind Marble builds or text inference, and on whether its models are a chip vendor's own open weights or its own. Simulation teams that run vendor models are the one group this deal can move soon, and the trigger would be an AMD world model they can download. Simulation teams with their own models have a slower reason to track AMD, because AMD says this research will feed its hardware, software and systems work [13]. Text-inference teams, whichever models they run, have nothing to change on Monday.

What to watch

  • An AMD world model with downloadable weights built on World Labs' research, the release that would put AMD next to Nvidia's Cosmos.
  • Regulatory review ahead of the year-end close the companies are targeting.
  • The first AMD chip or software release that the company ties to World Labs' workloads.
