Barclays gives itself three months to put half its developers on Claude Code
Barclays expects half its developers to use Anthropic's Claude Code by the end of 2026 and most of them during 2027. Its published results so far come from a staff search tool and an email sorter, so the coding goal is still a seat count.

What happened
- Barclays describes Claude Code as part of a move toward agentic systems built into how its technology is built, tested, secured and run.
- A Claude-based Colleague Knowledge Assistant, live since 2025, has more than 16,000 Barclays UK users and has handled over one million searches.
- Group co-COO Craig Bright said Claude is helping refresh legacy platforms, raise software quality and free technical specialists for harder problems.
Why it matters
- What it limits constraint By setting its targets as head counts, Barclays has publicly committed to a rollout speed, and productivity claims stay off the scorecard that investors can check.
- Who's exposed exposure Agentic coding inside how Barclays builds and runs software puts model-written code into a bank whose UK staff support more than 20 million retail customers, so its oversight controls must now cover code as well as answers.
- What it sets up precedent Anthropic now has a large regulated UK bank as a public reference for coding agents, and Paul Smith is already using it to argue that few institutions hold AI to that standard.

Meta halves internal use of Anthropic's Claude Code to about 30,000 staffConfirmed6 publishers
Both live deployments are retrieval and sorting jobs. In each one a person acts on what the model returns: staff answer the customer, and operations teams handle the routed request [7][8]. The assistant's million-plus searches across more than 16,000 users come to roughly 62 a head since 2025 [12]. At 120,000 emails a day, the Global Markets system gets through that many items in a little over eight days [13].
Claude Code is a different kind of deployment, aimed at the software itself. Its target counts people: half the developer population by the close of 2026, and a majority of software engineers during 2027 [2]. The announcement came on October 1 [1], so the first milestone is three months away [14]. The bank did not disclose its developer headcount, how many staff already use the tool, or what the expanded contract is worth.
The two milestones are closer together than the wording suggests. A majority is any share above half, so any figure above the 50 percent set for 2026 meets the 2027 goal [15]. The targets also use different nouns, developer population and software engineers [2], and those need not be the same group. Anthropic's chief commercial officer, Paul Smith, went further and summarised the footprint as reaching most engineers by 2027 [11].
I see three ways this plays out. One is distribution: licences go out on schedule, and use per engineer looks like the assistant's 62 searches a head [12]. A second is the outcome group co-COO Craig Bright described, with the tool doing real work on legacy refresh and software quality [4]. The third is that the governance, security controls and human oversight the bank says remain central [9] limit how much of the build-and-run cycle agents may touch.
I'd expect distribution to dominate through year-end. Three months is enough time to hand out access and too little to rewrite a legacy platform. The counter-case is that Barclays set the target after internal coding results it has kept private.
Both co-COOs say saved time will go to harder problems [4][5]. Anne Marie Darling's stated aim is a simpler organisation inside a controlled environment [5]. As described, then, the plan keeps the engineers and changes what they work on. A year-end figure for Claude Code output, defects or technology cost, reported as precisely as the email count, would support the second outcome and prove this view wrong.
What to watch
- Barclays' first Claude Code adoption figure after December 31, and whether it reports output or defect data alongside the head count.
- Whether the 2027 goal is restated as a specific percentage with a single denominator covering both developers and software engineers.
- Whether other UK banks announce coding-agent adoption targets they can be measured against Barclays' 50 percent.

On October 1, 2026, Barclays announced it is widening its partnership with Anthropic, bringing Claude models deeper into day-to-day work across the bank.
- [2]
Barclays expects Claude Code to be in use by half of its developer population by the close of 2026, and by a majority of software engineers during 2027.
- [3]
The bank is treating the coding tool as part of a broader shift toward agentic systems that sit inside how technology is built, tested, secured, and run.

Group co-chief operating officer Craig Bright said Claude is being used to help refresh legacy platforms, raise software quality, and free technical specialists for harder problems.

Group co-chief operating officer Anne Marie Darling said expanding Claude is meant to redesign processes, improve experiences and produce a simpler organization inside a controlled environment, and that cutting routine tasks should let people concentrate on complex problems.

The Colleague Knowledge Assistant is used by Barclays UK staff who support more than 20 million retail customers and runs on Claude through a retrieval-augmented generation setup.
- [7]
Running since 2025 on Claude, the Colleague Knowledge Assistant has been taken up by more than 16,000 colleagues and has handled over one million searches, giving staff faster access to information and shortening the path to customer support.

In Global Markets, models classify, enrich, and choose a processing path for incoming client emails so requests reach operations teams with the details needed to act; the platform handles roughly 120,000 emails a day.
- [9]
The bank says governance, security controls, and human oversight stay central as use grows.

Anthropic chief commercial officer Paul Smith called the work a significant UK milestone and said few institutions hold AI to that standard.

Paul Smith summarized the current footprint as helping 16,000 colleagues answer customer questions, sorting 120,000 emails a day, and reaching most engineers by 2027.
- [12]
The Colleague Knowledge Assistant has handled roughly 62 searches per colleague since 2025.

At 120,000 emails a day, the Global Markets system processes as many items as the assistant's lifetime searches in a little over eight days.

The end-2026 target of half of developers on Claude Code falls three months after the October 1 announcement.
- [15]
Because a majority is any share above 50 percent, the 2027 target is met by any adoption figure above the 50 percent set for end-2026.
