Bitmine caps its ether holdings at 5% of supply with about $200 million of buying left

Bitmine Immersion Technologies will stop buying ether at 5% of supply, a cap that leaves it about $200 million of purchases at Wednesday's price. For ether's flows, that limit matters more than Tom Lee's bull call, because one of the token's steadiest buyers is close to done.

What happened

  • Bitmine bought 12,500 ETH worth $33.65 million through BitGo, taking its holdings to about 4.9% of ether's supply.
  • Bitmine passed 6 million ETH only in late September and has added tens of millions of dollars of ether a week since, according to Bitcoin.com News.
  • Tom Lee told Token2049 Singapore on Oct. 7 that crypto is "2 days past the bottom" and that this may be the biggest bull market yet.
  • That same morning bitcoin fell from about $86,590 to $83,790 in roughly 20 minutes, and $412.62 million of positions were liquidated within an hour, almost all longs.

Why it matters

  • What it costs cost At this week's purchase size, the room left under the cap covers about six more buys, or eight on Lee's count, so ether loses Bitmine's weekly bid within weeks if the pace holds.
  • What it limits constraint Lee tied the cap to ending capital raises. Bitmine's share sales stop being a route for new money into ether, and holders will judge the stock on the ether it already owns.
  • Who's exposed exposure Staying at exactly 5% means getting rid of staking income. On Bitmine's $334 million revenue projection, that is roughly 10,600 ETH a month that could come to market.

Five percent of the 122.1 million ETH that Onchain Lens counts as supply is about 6.105 million [6][18]. Bitmine reported 6.016 million ETH on Oct. 5 [7]. Adding this week's purchase, Bitcoin.com News puts the remaining room at about 76,000 ETH, close to $200 million at a price near $2,617 [3]. Lee's own figure is higher. He said the company needs about 100,000 ETH more [5], roughly $262 million at the same price [19]. The two counts sit about 24,000 ETH apart, some $63 million [20].

Lee's case for stopping is about the stock. "So if we have a 5% hard cap, that means we're gonna outperform ETH on the way up, right?" he said. "'Cause you don't have to worry about us trying to raise capital. We're done." [4] The last tranche is small next to the balance sheet: between about 1.1% and 1.5% of the $17.4 billion of crypto and cash on the Oct. 5 update, depending on whose count is right [24]. What Bitmine is giving up is selling securities to buy ether, as with the $300 million perpetual preferred offering it launched in June [16]. It also has a $4 billion buyback program, and had repurchased 16.1 million shares under it by early August [16].

Lee also talked about the buying in the past tense, though the company has not yet reached its limit. "We protected the downside for ETH because we were buying. But now, we're done stacking in front of a 25X move," he said [2].

Staking makes the endgame messier. Lee has said the company could sell ether earned through staking to keep its share from rising above 5% [11]. Cointelegraph has reported Bitmine's own projection of $334 million a year in staking revenue from a $15.8 billion treasury [12]. Every ether that staking brings in before the cap is one Bitmine does not have to buy. The projection is in dollars, so the ether figure moves with the price. At $2,617 it is about 127,600 ETH a year [22], enough to fill 76,000 ETH of headroom in a little over seven months with no purchases at all [23].

Lee counted digital asset treasury companies soaking up supply among his four drivers of the bull market [15]. His own company is close to finished buying [3]. The roughly $200 million it has left is about what US spot ether ETFs lost on Oct. 6 alone, $201.89 million [17].

If the cap holds, Bitmine finishes in a handful of purchases. After that, on Lee's earlier description, it sells staking income at the margin [11]. The cap could also move. Lee said this week, "That's a hard cap. We're not gonna be accumulating past 5%." [1] But he had previously left room to go past 5% depending on Ethereum adoption, and he told Bankless in August that the company may revisit the question in 2027 [10]. The third possibility is the one Lee's thesis needs: other institutions take over a bid that has run at tens of millions of dollars a week [9]. I think the cap says more about ether's flows over the next few months than the bull call does, because the company published the number and controls it. That view is wrong if a Bitmine holdings update shows more than 6.105 million ETH without matching sales [18].

What to watch

  • Whether Bitmine discloses sales of staked ether once it reaches the cap, and in what monthly amounts.
  • Whether US spot ether ETF flows turn positive after the $201.89 million of outflows on Oct. 6.
  • How Bitmine squares Lee's 100,000 ETH gap with the 76,000 ETH implied by Onchain Lens's 122.1 million supply count.
