Interactive Brokers puts Ethereum staking in the same portal as clients' stocks, options and futures

Interactive Brokers, which reports more than $903 billion in client assets, launched Ethereum staking through Zerohash on Oct. 13. Rewards compound inside the staked balance, but the coverage of the launch does not state a reward rate or a fee, so a client cannot yet work out the net yield.

A $10,000 crypto buy or USDC deposit carries fees Dollar charges on $10,000, from IBKR's stated crypto commissions and Zerohash's 0.30% conversion fee on USDC deposits.

Key figures: a $10,000 crypto purchase at IBKR's 0.12% to 0.18% commission costs $12 to $18. A 0.30% Zerohash conversion fee on a $10,000 USDC deposit is $30. IBKR's crypto commission has a $1.75 minimum per order.

What happened

  • Clients use a Staking Dashboard in the Client Portal to request staking or unstaking and to monitor pending activity.
  • Chief executive Milan Galik compared staking with IBKR's Stock Yield Enhancement Program, which pays participating clients extra income on shares they own.
  • The platform already supports trading in 20 digital assets, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP, Chainlink, Aave and Dogecoin.

Why it matters

  • What it costs cost Entry charges come out of the balance before any reward compounds, so a client starts the staking period behind by the commission and any conversion fee.
  • Who's exposed exposure One provider now sits under four IBKR crypto functions, so a change in Zerohash's terms would reach deposits, wallet accounts, token listings and staking together.
  • What it limits constraint A client at another IBKR affiliate has no announced date, and the broker's earlier rollouts show that country of residence can decide which crypto features a client gets.

The prices IBKR has published for crypto attach to getting in. A $10,000 purchase at the 0.12% to 0.18% commission costs $12 to $18, so the $1.75 minimum never binds, and the published pricing excludes added spreads and markups [6][14]. Funding the account with USDC costs more than the commission: IBKR charged no deposit fee, but Zerohash applied a 0.30% conversion fee with a $1 minimum, or $30 on $10,000 [10][15].

Where IBKR's own economics sit in staking is our inference. A share of rewards taken before crediting would not appear as a line item the way a commission does, and rewards arrive as additional staked cryptocurrency, so the split would be invisible in the balance [7]. The counter-reading is that IBKR takes nothing and treats staking as a reason to keep Ether on the platform, which fits what chief executive Milan Galik said: "We want clients to earn more from the assets they hold" [8][9]. A published fee schedule showing a zero share would settle it for that reading, and a nonzero share would settle it for ours.

Zerohash is a recurring name in this build. It processed USDC deposits from January, converting them to dollars before crediting brokerage accounts [10]. In March it was one of two providers, with Paxos, holding the accounts for transferred wallet assets [11]. In July it supplied nine of the tokens added to the platform, against three through Paxos [12]. Staking is the fourth function it performs [3][13]. We think IBKR is assembling its crypto offering from provider parts and putting its own effort into the client-facing portal, an inference drawn only from who is named in each announcement.

Eligibility is narrower than the 5 million clients IBKR says it serves worldwide [17]. Staking starts with eligible Interactive Brokers LLC clients [2]. Earlier launches split by entity. The March wallet-transfer feature covered Interactive Brokers LLC and Interactive Brokers U.K. Limited [11], and in July bidirectional stablecoin funding was unavailable to clients of the U.K. and Ireland entities, with availability depending on the affiliate and the customer's country of residence [12]. We'd expect staking to reach other entities one at a time on the same pattern.

What to watch

  • A published staking fee schedule or reward split: a zero share favors the retention reading, a nonzero share favors ours.
  • Whether staking extends to the U.K. and Ireland entities, where July's bidirectional stablecoin funding was unavailable.
  • Whether IBKR adds staking for other assets among its 20 tradable digital assets, and whether Zerohash runs those too.
