Cboe locks up S&P 500 index options through 2051 with a 25-year licence renewal
Cboe renewed its exclusive S&P 500 options licence with S&P Dow Jones Indices to 2051, keeping a market that traded a record 970.6 million contracts in 2025. The tokenized-options language in the 25-year deal commits neither firm to a product, so the value anyone can count today sits in the existing contract.

What happened
- The two firms said they may collaborate on products "beyond traditional index derivatives," naming tokenized options contracts as one of them.
- SPX options averaged 3.9 million contracts a day in 2025, a figure Cryptopolitan put 25% above the previous year.
- The partnership dates to 1983, when Cboe launched the first S&P 500 index options.
- Cboe shares rose more than 6% after the announcement.
Why it matters
- What it limits constraint Other options exchanges cannot list S&P 500 Index options before 2051, because S&P DJI has committed that licence to Cboe alone for 25 more years.
- Who's exposed exposure A tokenized S&P 500 option would be a separate product, so whether it falls inside Cboe's exclusive rights decides whether S&P DJI could take the index on-chain through another venue.
- What it limits constraint The timetable for any tokenized SPX contract depends on a separate SEC process for derivatives, since the Sept. 17 relief covers only tokenized NMS stocks.

For 25 more years S&P DJI cannot license S&P 500 Index options to another exchange [1], and by the end of the term the partnership will be 68 years old [15]. The reports do not include the licence fee, or say whether Cboe's exclusive rights would extend to an on-chain version of the contract. The tokenization wording is looser than the licence itself. The firms "may collaborate" on new products [2], and any tokenized contract would be distinct from the SPX options trading today, according to Decrypt [5].
Craig Donohue, Cboe's chief executive, said the extension will give the company "significant runway to pursue the next frontier of innovation" [9]. The SEC's Sept. 17 Innovation Exemption lets qualifying venues trade tokenized NMS stocks through permissioned automated market makers and liquidity pools [6]. It does not reach SPX options or tokenized derivatives of any type, so a Cboe-S&P DJI product would need its own regulatory process, Cryptopolitan reported [7].
The clause could stay a sentence in a press release while that separate process runs. A product could arrive late, because an option carries expiration dates, strike prices and settlement mechanics that a token has to handle [10]. Or demand could set the pace. Binance Research put tokenized equities at $4.43 billion on Sept. 15, up 390.4% on the year [11], a growth rate that puts the year-earlier figure near $0.9 billion [16]. Monthly trading in tokenized equities rose ninefold between January and July, from $1 billion to $9 billion, according to Cryptopolitan [12][17].
I think nearly all of the value in the announcement, or rather all of the value with a trading record behind it, sits in the renewal, though the share rise [13] cannot be split between the two halves. The counter-case comes from S&P DJI. Catherine Clay, its chief executive, said the companies envision "a future where every investor, everywhere, can access this benchmark in the format that best suits their needs" [14]. If tokenized options fall outside Cboe's exclusive rights, that sentence describes an index owner keeping room to sell new formats of its benchmark while the listed options stay with Cboe to 2051 [1]. I am wrong if the companies disclose that Cboe's exclusivity covers tokenized S&P 500 options, because the clause would then extend Cboe's exclusive position into tokenized trading.
What to watch
- Any SEC process or exemption for tokenized options or other derivatives beyond the Sept. 17 relief for tokenized NMS stocks.
- Disclosure of the licence fee or other financial terms of the 2051 extension in Cboe's filings.
- A named tokenized S&P 500 options product from Cboe and S&P DJI with a venue and a launch date.
