OpenAI's Intelligent UI turns ChatGPT answers into sliders and tappable diagrams
OpenAI's Intelligent UI, launched with GPT-6, has ChatGPT build working calculators and tappable diagrams into its answers. Teams running in-product assistants should expect users to compare their text answers with that, though the evidence so far is demos and one reporter's test.
The Product Desk
What happened
- Pro, Plus, Business and Enterprise subscribers get Intelligent UI globally alongside GPT-6, with Free and Go users following a day later.
- Google announced a comparable feature for Search earlier this year, called generative UI, including an adjustable black-hole explainer with several sliders.
- In OpenAI's demo, product manager Aarush Selvan asked ChatGPT to explore how an airplane wing generates lift and got back a set of illustrative diagrams.
- Users who want fewer visuals can tell ChatGPT to dial them back, the same way they adjust other parts of its personality.
Why it matters
- Who has to decide decision Teams with their own assistants now have to choose, question by question, which answers justify a built calculator or chart and which should stay as text.
- Who's exposed exposure A generated seat map or rent calculator looks just as finished when its numbers are wrong, so users get fewer visual cues to double-check what the model made.
- What it limits constraint When the model assembles the interface for each answer, designers lose some control over what their product looks like to each user, a change Wired's reporter says may give designers an identity crisis.

GPT-6 assembles ChatGPT's interactive answers from a fixed library of native componentsConfirmed2 publishers
A Wired reporter who dislikes sitting in exit rows asked ChatGPT to build a tool comparing the cabin layouts of four Alaska and Delta planes. The result was a seat map where any seat could be tapped for details, with the exit rows highlighted in green [13]. In the same session, the reporter made a San Francisco apartment affordability calculator. It had sliders for income and other expenses and showed what percentage of take-home pay each unit would cost [14].
OpenAI says the goal is to make "learning complex topics easier" [8]. Its own examples lean that way, with a diagram of bicycle mechanics and a map for a multi-day hike [9]. The reporter's favorite result was the seat explorer [13]. The seat explorer and the rent calculator both help with a decision, where to sit and what rent to pay, and in both the user wants to change an input and look again [13][14]. In a text chat, each new income figure means another prompt and another paragraph.
Not every answer will get a chart [4]. "We have a design team that spent a lot of time figuring out when adding a diagram, chart, or buttons adds value versus when it's starting to feel cluttered," Aarush Selvan, an OpenAI product manager, told Wired [5]. He also said "ChatGPT has predominantly been a text-based interface" [10], and that for everyday jobs such as planning a recipe or a trip, "the most helpful answers aren't just text" [11].
The people this changes most are teams running assistants inside their own products. Wired puts ChatGPT's audience at over a billion users [16]. In my view, a customer who has dragged a rent slider in ChatGPT will find a correct, well-sourced paragraph from a help-center bot thin by comparison.
So far the evidence is one reporter's quick test before launch [17] and a brief demonstration on a call with journalists [18]. Neither account includes usage or retention figures, or a check that the generated seat maps matched the airlines' real configurations.
A team deciding whether to follow can sort its assistant's most common questions on two axes. The first is whether the user will change an input and ask again, such as an income figure or a seat choice. The second is whether the answer depends on data the model has to get right and the user cannot easily check, such as a fleet's seat layout or this month's rents. Savings estimates and other questions with a moving input and forgiving data suit a generated tool [9]. Seat maps and pricing also have a moving input, but the data has to be exact, so the tool should run on the team's own records [13]. Questions with one fixed answer can stay as text, with a source link when the stakes are high. In every quadrant, the measure is whether the user finishes the task without sending a follow-up prompt, and how long that takes. A count of slider drags would climb just as fast for a tool that confused people.
What to watch
- OpenAI publishing figures on how often Intelligent UI elements appear in answers and how many users dial them back.
- Independent checks of whether data-heavy generated tools, such as cabin maps and rent calculators, get their underlying numbers right.
- Whether OpenAI gives developers a way to put Intelligent UI-style generated components inside their own products.

Intelligent UI will be customizable: like other aspects of ChatGPT's personality, users who don't want so many visuals will be able to dial them back.
- [7]
OpenAI says many of the visuals will be interactive, including tappable buttons, customized calculators for specific tasks, interactive charts, editable graphs and other elements users can work with directly.
- [8]
According to OpenAI, the goal of Intelligent UI is to make "learning complex topics easier."
- [9]
Other examples provided by OpenAI include visuals for recipes, a diagram to understand bicycle mechanics, a map for a multi-day hiking excursion and a personal savings calculator.

Google announced similar visual results for Search earlier this year, called "generative UI"; one example is an adjustable graphic explaining how black holes work using multiple sliders.
- [13]
Wired's reporter, who is not a fan of sitting in exit rows, asked ChatGPT to generate a custom tool comparing cabin layouts across four Alaska and Delta planes; any seat on the map could be tapped for more details and ChatGPT highlighted the exit rows in green. The reporter called this airplane seat explorer their favorite part of the hands-on.
- [14]
Wired's reporter generated a San Francisco apartment affordability calculator with movable sliders to adjust income and other expenses, showing what percentage of take-home pay different units would cost.
- [15]
OpenAI product manager Aarush Selvan asked ChatGPT to "explore how an airplane wing generates lift" and the chatbot quickly spun up a number of illustrative diagrams.
- [16]
Wired describes the updated ChatGPT as reaching over a billion users.
- [17]
Wired's reporter got a quick test of the interface before launch.
- [18]
In a call with journalists, OpenAI staff gave a brief demonstration of Intelligent UI's capabilities.
- [19]
Wired's reporter wrote that a larger shift toward generative user interfaces may spark an identity crisis for designers, as AI dictates more of what software looks like for individual users.
