Honor's Magic 9 Pro Max launches in China with an 8,800 mAh battery

Honor launched the Magic 9 Pro Max in China with an 8,800 mAh battery that The Verge reports is up to 40 percent silicon. Buyers and app teams plan around hours of use, and that figure still waits on independent battery tests.

What happened

  • Honor says the Pro Max's wider camera island is more space-efficient and left extra room inside the phone for the larger battery.
  • The battery supports 100W wired charging and 80W wireless charging.
  • Honor has confirmed Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and Southeast Asia for a global rollout it describes only as coming soon.
  • 9to5Google sees no reason to expect the phone to go on sale in the US.

Why it matters

  • What it limits constraint Rival hardware teams can match 8,800 mAh on a spec sheet, but until someone times the phone they cannot tell whether it outlasts a smaller cell paired with lower-draw parts.
  • Who has to decide decision App developers have no basis yet for loosening background power budgets, since a phone not expected in the US leaves their American users' devices unchanged.
  • What it sets up precedent Putting 8,000 mAh in the smaller Magic 9 makes very large cells Honor's series default, so rivals now face the capacity comparison at two screen sizes.

By the second evening of a trip, the number a person checks is the percentage left in the status bar. That number depends on how fast the phone drains the cell as much as on how big the cell is [1]. Neither launch report includes a measured battery-life figure.

The Magic 9 Pro Max has a lot drawing on that cell. It drives a 6.8-inch 2868x1320 OLED rated for 10,000 nits peak, with 1-120Hz adaptive refresh [9]. It runs the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 [2] and adds Honor's own Imaging Chip H1 for camera processing [10].

The Verge asked Honor why it used the Extreme part when the phone does not support the 8K60 or 4K240 video recording that chip enables [12]. Honor told the publication the choice was "about delivering a complete and consistent flagship experience, rather than pursuing a single benchmark result." [13] Whatever power that extra headroom uses comes out of the same cell.

The Magic 9, launched the same day, has an 8,000 mAh battery, a 6.37-inch display and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 [11]. The Pro Max cell is 800 mAh larger, or 10 percent [14], for a screen 0.43 inches bigger on the diagonal [15] and a different chip.

Here's what teams tell themselves when a phone like this launches: batteries are getting bigger, so an app can spend more power in the background. Here's what an app's users actually hold: the phones sold where they live. This one is available today in China [3]. It raises the ceiling on one device and leaves the smallest batteries in an app's install base where they were.

The test I'd apply to a battery headline has two axes, and it works the same for a rival's hardware team and for an app team setting a power budget. The first axis is whether someone other than the maker has published a measured runtime. The second is whether the phone ships in the markets where your users are. Only a phone that clears both is grounds to revisit a power budget or a spec target. At launch, the Magic 9 Pro Max clears neither for a US-focused team [4]. For teams selling into Europe or Southeast Asia, both are still pending [5].

What to watch

  • Independent screen-on and standby tests of the Magic 9 Pro Max, the first figures that turn 8,800 mAh into hours.
  • Launch dates and prices for the Magic 9 Pro Max in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and Southeast Asia.
  • Whether rival flagships launching after this one match the capacity with high-silicon cells of their own.
