Kia edges past BMW into second place in UK car sales by 776 vehicles

Kia sold 76,850 cars in Britain from January to August, 776 more than BMW, to take second place behind Volkswagen on SMMT figures. That lead is under a tenth of Kia's average month in Britain, close enough for the order to change by December.

What happened

  • Audi finished fourth with 71,904 cars and Ford fifth with 71,050 in SMMT's January-August ranking.
  • The Kia Sportage sold 30,564 units, making it Britain's second-best-selling model behind the Ford Puma at 35,968.
  • Britain's 1,388,736 car sales from January to August were 15.1% of Europe's market, second to Germany's 21.4%, according to ACEA.

Why it matters

  • Who's exposed exposure Kia's second place depends on one model: without the Sportage, its other models' 46,286 sales would rank below Ford's 71,050 in fifth.
  • What it limits constraint SMMT's table ranks cars sold, so Kia passing BMW and Audi on volume does not show which brand earns more from British buyers.
  • What it sets up precedent If Kia's last four months only repeat 2025's, the year lands near 115,164, a record roughly 1.5% above 2025 that continues three years of slowing growth.

Over eight months, the 776-car gap between Kia and BMW works out to 97 cars a month [17]. ACEA counted 1,388,736 cars sold in Britain over the same period [11]. Against that total, each brand holds about 5.5% of the market, Kia at 5.53% and BMW at 5.48% [13]. Those shares combine SMMT brand data with an ACEA total, so the second decimal is approximate. Audi is 4,946 cars behind Kia [18].

Yonhap presents the result as Kia surpassing European brands such as BMW and Audi [6]. The table supports a change in rank. It covers one Korean brand, which grew 2.3% [2], and neither report gives BMW's or Audi's volumes for the same period last year. One inference holds anyway. Kia moved up one place from a year earlier [6]. The brand it displaced therefore sold more than Kia's year-ago total of roughly 75,122 [14] and now sells fewer than 76,850, so it either grew by less than about 2.3% or shrank [15].

The Sportage accounts for 30,564 of Kia's 76,850 sales, or 39.8% [16], in line with the roughly 40% Yonhap cited [9]. According to Seoul Economic Daily, the model has won What Car?'s Family SUV award for four straight years [12].

Kia's UK growth has been slowing for three years. Annual sales rose 7.6% in 2023, 4.2% in 2024 and 1.1% in 2025 [19]. This year's 2.3% through August [2] is a modest pickup from the last of those.

Yonhap expects Kia to pass 100,000 for a fifth straight year and set an annual record if the trend holds [10]. The first needs 23,150 more cars in four months, about 60% of what Kia sold in the same months of 2025 [20]. The record is harder. A 2.3% gain implies Kia sold about 75,122 cars in January-August 2025, which leaves roughly 38,314 for September to December of that year [14]. To beat 113,436, Kia needs 36,587 more this year, about 4.5% fewer than it sold in those four months of 2025 [21].

The year can end three ways. Kia holds second and sets a small record. BMW makes up 776 cars over four months and retakes second, while Kia still sets a record. Or Kia's last four months come in more than 4.5% below 2025's, and it misses the record while clearing 100,000 with room to spare. I'd expect a record, because Kia is running 2.3% ahead of last year [2] and has a 4.5% cushion on the remaining months [21]. Second place is less secure on a margin of 97 cars a month [17]. In my view the result shows one strong model at a brand whose UK growth has slowed [19]. The counter-case is that BMW and Audi are both shrinking in Britain and Kia passed rivals in decline. If so, Yonhap's description of Kia surpassing European brands would reflect a real loss of premium volume [6].

What to watch

  • SMMT year-on-year figures for BMW and Audi, to see whether Kia passed shrinking rivals or outgrew slow ones.
  • SMMT's September data, the first of four months in which BMW has to make up 776 cars to take second place back.
  • UK figures for a second Korean brand, which are needed before Kia's ranking can be read as a Korean gain at European makers' expense.
