Three chief executives and a Nigerian owner later, Leatherback becomes Foren
Leatherback, the UK-founded payments firm Zedcrest Group bought in July, renamed itself Foren on 5 October after what it calls a two-year rebuild. Counterparties now face a Nigerian-owned, enterprise-focused firm whose compliance overhaul only the company has vouched for.
The Investor · Invest desk
What happened
- Founder and chief executive Ibrahim Ibitade stepped down in October 2024, and his successor, Toni Campbell, left the company in June 2025.
- A new management team followed and steered the business toward enterprise clients, away from the consumer focus Leatherback had until then.
- Zedcrest, founded in 2013, is a financial group working across investment banking, asset management, securities, financing and fintech.
- Foren says customers will get revamped web and mobile apps, faster onboarding and additional payment corridors.
Why it matters
- Who's exposed exposure Partners clearing payments for Foren now carry exposure to a controlling owner whose main businesses are investment banking and securities, with its capital commitment to the unit undisclosed.
- Who has to decide decision Banks and payment partners that onboarded Leatherback have to decide whether new ownership and management warrant a fresh review of the entity, even though customer accounts carry over.
- What it limits constraint A partner cannot use the rebrand to lower Foren's risk rating until a regulator or auditor confirms the compliance overhaul the company describes.

"For two years we've been rebuilding everything a customer relies on but rarely sees," Ochebhoya Ekpete, Foren's chief executive, said, according to Condia [6]. "By the time that work was done, we were a different company, and Leatherback no longer described us," he said [7]. The company also explained the wait: changing the name earlier "would have been a promise we hadn't yet kept" [8].
The dates fit the two-year account. Ibitade's departure [4] and the 5 October announcement [1] are 24 months apart [20]. Campbell lasted roughly eight months as chief executive [18], and Ekpete is the third person to hold the job in that span [21]. Zedcrest's purchase closed in July [2]. Tech In Africa puts the gap to the rename at three months [9] and Condia at two [10]; without a closing date, both counts fit [19].
The company says Zedcrest brought "a stronger capital base and institutional backing" [3]. The reports do not include a price for the acquisition or a size for that capital. When the deal was announced, group managing director Adedayo Amzat said it reflected the group's view that technology and global connectivity will shape the future of financial services, Tech In Africa reported [12].
One reading is that the rebuild is what Foren says it is. Since July it has increased spending on governance and hired across compliance, product, legal and finance [23], the usual work of a new owner ahead of a relaunch. Another is that the name moved before anyone outside the company could check the work. Every statement in these reports about the overhauled compliance systems and regulatory capabilities comes from Foren [22]. A third is that little changes at the contract level. Existing customers keep their accounts and move to the new Foren apps [15], so whatever history Leatherback built up stays with the business.
I think the third reading is the one to act on. Foren has a new owner [2] and new managers [5] attached to the same customer accounts [15], and the first two readings stay open until an outside party verifies the compliance claims. The counter-case is that a firm that held its rename until the rebuild was finished, by its own account [8], has earned some benefit of the doubt. A regulatory authorisation published under the Foren name, or a capital figure from Zedcrest, would move me toward it.
The enterprise turn also shows where the money is not going. Leatherback's platform served individuals as well as businesses [14]; Foren's stated targets are companies that collect from overseas customers and pay suppliers in other markets [11]. The company concedes the job is unfinished, with more products to build and more markets to add [17].
What to watch
- Any disclosure from Zedcrest or Foren of the acquisition price or the capital injected into the payments business.
- Regulatory registers listing Foren's authorisations under its new name and owner, the first outside check on the compliance overhaul.
- Whether the additional payment corridors go live, and how remaining individual customers are handled in the migration to Foren's apps.
