What happened

  • EFY Finance says it serves more than 25,000 active individual and business accounts.
  • Tether named six operating markets for EFY: Bolivia, Colombia, Mexico, El Salvador, Panama and Ecuador.
  • EFY holds a Digital Asset Service Provider license in El Salvador.
  • USAT is issued by Anchorage Digital Bank N.A., a federally chartered U.S. bank, and Tether says it supported the launch.

Why it matters

  • What it limits constraint Because Tether disclosed no figures, the price it pays per account or per country cannot be computed from the public record.
  • What doesn't add up contradiction USAT is designed for the U.S. market, yet it sits in a Latin American pitch that does not say which country or use comes first.
  • Who's exposed exposure Cryptobriefing notes that stablecoin treatment varies widely across EFY's countries and that an El Salvador license does not automatically ease the path in Bolivia or Colombia.
  • What it sets up precedent According to Cryptobriefing, Ualá drew $20 million from Tether in July, so EFY is at least Tether's second Latin American fintech investment this year and a third would fit the pattern.

Start with the 17. EFY says its settlement reaches local accounts in 17 countries [6], Cryptobriefing put the figure at more than 17 [20], and Tether named six operating markets [3]. That leaves as many as 11 countries Tether has not named [17]. The account base looks thin against that spread: more than 25,000 active accounts [5] comes to more than 1,470 a country if divided evenly across 17 [22] (the division will not be even, and the weight probably sits in the six named markets [3]).

We think Tether is paying for something that already exists, or rather, for a licensed operator's existing claim on distribution. The case against is easy to state. Tether did not disclose the size of the round, its other investors [7], or any new banking partnerships, payment corridors or launch dates [8]. The check may be one small ticket. So whatever Tether is buying has to be worth something today. For the view, there is Tether's own list of reasons for backing EFY, which was its existing customer relationships, banking connections and regulatory arrangements [16], and Ardoino's framing of demand. He said: "Across Latin America, the US dollar is a lifeline against inflation and capital controls." [15]

EFY differs from Ualá, the Argentine neobank, in who uses it: Ualá faces consumers, and EFY is infrastructure other businesses and institutions can build on [12]. In our view that shows what Tether is buying here. It is taking a position in an operator that already holds the entity and bank links in each country that Tether would otherwise have to set up itself.

The market-size figure Tether supplied is a regional total. It cited Chainalysis data showing nearly $1.5 trillion in Latin American crypto transaction volume between July 2022 and June 2025 [13], or about $500 billion a year [18]. The figures cover cryptocurrency activity broadly and do not show how much of it was payments, remittances or trading. Tether did not disclose EFY's own transaction volume [14].

The test is how the 25,000 accounts split. If the six named markets hold nearly all of them, the 17 is a coverage claim, and the footprint Tether is buying is six countries, or about 35% of the headline [19].

What to watch

  • A first USAT use case or launch country inside EFY's services.
  • A bank partner, payment corridor or launch date named by EFY or Tether.
  • Disclosure of the seed round total or its other investors.
