Robinhood seeks approval to trade selected US stocks through the 48 weekend hours its market closes
Robinhood is seeking approval to let customers trade a curated list of US stocks and ETFs on weekends, the 48 hours a week its 24 Hour Market is shut. Weekend prices will depend on whether dealers quote through those hours and on how the trades clear and settle.

What happened
- Weekend orders would route through Bruce ATS, run by Bruce Markets, whose majority owners are Robinhood and PEAK6 Investments.
- Robinhood has not set a launch date; the feature needs regulatory approval and could arrive soon or early next year, the company indicated.
- Robinhood's existing 24 Hour Market, launched in 2023, runs from Sunday 8 p.m. to Friday 8 p.m. Eastern time.
- The plan was unveiled at the HOOD Summit in Houston alongside AI trading agents, Cboe earnings contracts and Bitstamp perpetual futures.
Why it matters
- Who's exposed exposure As the broker routing weekend orders and a majority co-owner of the venue filling them, Robinhood answers for weekend execution quality at both ends of each trade.
- What it costs cost Weekend customers pay for thin order books through the lower liquidity, higher volatility and wider spreads Robinhood already warns come with off-hours trading.
- What it sets up precedent Marex Clearing's Thomas Texier says asset managers and corporates want to hedge over weekends, so clearing firms will face requests for weekend capacity from institutions as well as retail brokers.

That schedule is five full days, or 120 hours of a 168-hour week [16]. The weekend request covers the remaining 48 hours, about 29% of the clock [17][18]. Robinhood is asking for less than those hours suggest: only a curated list of stocks and ETFs would trade, and the rest of the listed universe would stay closed on weekends [2].
The demand case rests on one figure, and the two reports describe it differently. Reuters, as cited by Cryptopolitan, said that about 10 months after the weekday overnight session launched in 2023, as much as 25% of daily volume on the busiest days was happening outside standard hours [7]. Crypto Briefing presents roughly 25% as the current busy-day share on the 24 Hour Market [8]. The first is a peak reached inside the product's first year. The second is a present-tense level [7][8].
Robinhood's pitch is aimed at people who trade on headlines. "Breaking news doesn't wait for an opening bell," Steve Quirk, a Robinhood executive, said [6]. Abhishek Fatehpuria, Robinhood's vice president of product management, told Reuters, "Our focus this year is making Robinhood the best place for active traders by giving them the tools that are typically reserved for hedge funds, quants and a lot of big active trading firms" [5].
The unresolved operational question is clearing and settlement. Cryptopolitan's report says a 24/7 market carries higher requirements for clearing, staffing, settlement and risk management [10], and that the CFTC has issued guidance on round-the-clock trading, clearing and settlement [11]. Robinhood did not say how weekend fills on Bruce ATS would clear or settle. A dealer that buys stock from a customer on a Saturday has to sell it in the same thin session or carry it. Crypto Briefing notes that alternative trading systems lack the order-flow depth that primary exchanges have in regular hours [13].
Once approved, the curated list might draw enough dealer quotes to keep weekend spreads close to those of the weekday overnight session. It might instead stay thin and trade in size only on news-heavy weekends. Approval could also drag on. I expect the thin version first, because Robinhood chose a short list and sold the session on breaking news. Coinbase's record points the other way. Liz Martin, its chief of derivatives, told an FIA roundtable that its 24/7 futures, launched in May 2025, trade billion-dollar volumes every weekend during major news events, according to Cryptopolitan [14]. If dealers staff weekends for that flow, they may do it for equities too.
The list will show which way it went. If Robinhood widens it within months of launch, market makers are quoting weekends at a risk they can carry, and the thin-session view is wrong.
What to watch
- A regulatory decision that sets a launch date, and how many stocks and ETFs are on the curated list on day one.
- Any disclosure from Robinhood or Bruce Markets on how weekend trades clear and settle.
- Robinhood's first weekend volume figures, set against the roughly 25% busy-day share of its weekday overnight session.
