Meta's VR Glasses weigh 100g because the computer sits in your pocket
Meta priced its glasses-shaped VR headset at $1,299 and moved the processor into a puck you carry in your pocket. Shipping is promised for what the company calls Spring 2027. That means March 2027 at the earliest.
The Product Desk
What happened
- Meta unveiled the VR Glasses at its Connect developer conference on Wednesday and priced them at $1,299, with pricing for other regions still to be confirmed.
- The device is not due until what Meta calls Spring 2027, a window TechRadar takes to mean March, April or May of that year.
- An optical cable runs from the visor to a pocket puck that holds the battery and all of the headset's compute, where the Vision Pro and Galaxy XR pucks hold only power.
- No controllers come in the box: the device is built for eye and hand control, works with existing Quest controllers, and new controllers will be sold separately.
- The puck ships with 128GB of storage and a MicroSD slot that takes higher-speed cards, the first expandable storage Meta has put on a VR headset.
Why it matters
- What it costs cost The controller-free box moves cost onto whoever owns a pre-hand-tracking VR library: each of those titles needs a controller purchase or a spare Quest controller for every user who runs it.
- What doesn't add up contradiction CNET and TechRadar rate the same passthrough differently, so a team whose use case depends on seeing the real room cannot size that risk from the demo coverage.
- What it limits constraint A shared unit passed between users is now two objects and a tether, so asset tracking and hygiene routines built around a single headset need reworking.
- What it sets up precedent Putting the processor in the pocket gives buyers a number to hold every other XR vendor to, and the vendors still mounting silicon on the head get asked about it first.

Xreal's Android XR Aura undercuts Meta's VR Glasses by $20 on the same Qualcomm chipConfirmed13 publishers
TechRadar's reviewer let the headset scan the table in front of him, then typed on a keyboard and trackpad projected onto it, as swiftly and accurately, he wrote, as on a physical accessory [26]. The same session ran up to three virtual monitors off one connected PC [10]. Both are things you do sitting down, and TechRadar said so: "where this headset truly shines is static experiences: productivity and entertainment" [9].
TechRadar calls the worn part one-fifth the weight of a Quest 3 or a Samsung Galaxy XR [14]. That puts those two near 500 grams and leaves about 400 grams to account for [22]. It is in your pocket, in a puck on an optical cable [2]. The pucks for the Apple Vision Pro and the Galaxy XR carry power; Meta's carries the processor as well [3]. Neither hands-on reported the puck's weight.
Backward compatibility costs money here. Apps built for the Quest 3 run, but any of them without hand tracking needs controllers, sold as a paid add-on or borrowed off a Quest you already own [8]. So $1,299 buys a working seat only where the library is hand-tracked, and everything older adds a controller pair per head [1][8]. Meta has promised games built for eye and hand control, including a saber-less Beat Saber called Beat Saber Flux, due next year [19]. It also closed games studios, software initiatives and fitness apps, Supernatural among them, earlier this year [23]. Disney Plus and its library of 3D films are coming to the headset; TechRadar takes that as the end of the app's exclusivity on Apple hardware [24].
The front cover is opaque, and looks see-through to the wearer only because of the passthrough video [4]. The two hands-ons rate that video differently. CNET called the color passthrough a big notch up from the Quest 3 and close to where Samsung and Apple are with their more expensive headsets [6]. TechRadar found it still a little grainy with a slight delay, and at least as good as the competition [5]. TechRadar's write-up ended with the line "this is a headset I don't see myself needing to take off, even after multiple days of working with it on" [16]. The demo ran about 30 minutes [15].
Two variables sort this for anyone budgeting a 2027 buy: whether the task needs a controller, and whether the user moves while doing it. Seated with hand-tracked apps is the cell where the advertised price is the whole price. Seated with older apps adds controllers to every seat. Moving with hand-tracked apps puts the puck and the cable in the path of the work, and the only evidence so far is TechRadar's reviewer reporting that the wire never got in the way while he was up and moving [21]. Moving with older apps is a Quest job, and those apps already run on the Quest [8].
What to watch
- A published price for the separately sold controllers. That price sets the real per-seat cost for any controller-era app.
- Whether the Spring 2027 window firms up into a date or slips past May.
- Whether developers add hand tracking to existing Quest titles before launch. Every title that gets it shrinks the controller line item.

The Meta VR Glasses will cost $1,299; TechRadar notes pricing elsewhere is still to be confirmed.
- [2]
The bulk of the weight is housed in a puck carried in the pocket, tethered to the headset by an optical cable.
- [3]
Unlike the pucks used by the Apple Vision Pro and Samsung Galaxy XR, which are battery packs, Meta's puck also houses all of the headset's compute.
- [4]
Despite the name, the device is a headset with an opaque front cover that only appears see-through to the wearer because of passthrough video.
- [5]
TechRadar reports the passthrough feed is not yet perfect, still a little grainy with a slight delay, though it seems at least as good as the competition.
- [6]
CNET reports the color passthrough video quality was a big notch up from the Quest 3 and felt close to where Samsung and Apple are with their more expensive headsets.
- [7]
The Meta VR Glasses come with no controllers at all; they work with Meta Quest controllers, new controllers will be sold separately, and the device is designed to work controller-free with eye and hand tracking.
- [8]
The device runs existing Meta Quest 3-compatible apps, but apps that do not support hand tracking require controllers, either as a new paid add-on or by using the controllers from a Quest the user already owns.
- [9]
TechRadar wrote: "where this headset truly shines is static experiences: productivity and entertainment".
- [10]
Each connected laptop or PC can be extended to up to three virtual monitors, which TechRadar says some previous virtual desktop apps could not offer.
- [11]
Meta unveiled the VR Glasses on Wednesday at its Connect developer conference, alongside camera-free Meta Ray-Bans, an FDA-cleared hearing enhancement feature and plans to install its Muse AI agent across its smart glasses lineup.
- [12]
The headset is not due to launch until what Meta calls "Spring 2027", which TechRadar reads as March, April or May.
- [13]
The part of the device worn on the head weighs around 100 grams, and it uses glasses stems instead of a headstrap.
- [14]
TechRadar describes the 100g worn part as one-fifth the weight of a Meta Quest 3 or a Samsung Galaxy XR.
- [15]
TechRadar's hands-on demo lasted around 30 minutes.
- [16]
TechRadar wrote: "this is a headset I don't see myself needing to take off, even after multiple days of working with it on".
- [17]
The processor puck comes with 128GB of storage and has a MicroSD card slot for expandable storage requiring higher-speed cards, a first for Meta's VR headsets.
- [18]
The puck holds the device's single USB-C passthrough port, and devices connected through it can be streamed into the VR environment; CNET's reviewer did not get to try this.
- [19]
Meta is promising a series of new games optimized for the device and controlled by eye and hand tracking, including a sabre-free version of Beat Saber called Beat Saber Flux arriving next year.
- [20]
Prescription inserts connect magnetically to the display lenses without disrupting the slimness of the headset, and Meta scanned CNET's reviewer's eyeglasses to supply matching inserts.
- [21]
TechRadar's reviewer reports the optical cable never got in the way while he used the headset, whether up and moving, playing Beat Saber Flux, or sitting multitasking across multiple windows.
- [22]
If 100 grams is one-fifth of a Quest 3 or Galaxy XR, those headsets weigh about 500 grams, and roughly 400 grams of comparable mass now sits off the head in the pocket puck.
- [23]
Meta has released waves of smart glasses in recent years while ditching games studios, software initiatives and fitness apps, including Supernatural earlier this year.
- [24]
The Disney Plus app and its library of 3D films are coming to Meta's new headset, which TechRadar says appears to end the app's Apple exclusivity.
- [25]
The visor has a magnesium frame and comes in two different sizes, according to CNET.
- [26]
The headset can scan a surface in front of the user and project a virtual keyboard and trackpad onto it; TechRadar's reviewer says he was able to type as swiftly and accurately as on a physical accessory.
