Meta prices its camera-free glasses below the Ray-Bans that can see
The Ray-Ban Meta Audio pair runs the same Muse assistant as the Gen 3 flagship and drops the image capture that Mark Zuckerberg named first when he explained why glasses beat every other AI wearable.
The Product Desk
What happened
- Zuckerberg used Meta Connect 2026 to announce three new glasses, the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3, the Meta VR Glasses and the camera-free Meta Audio Glasses, plus an update on last year's Ray-Ban Display.
- Wired reports the camera-free Ray-Ban Meta Audio pair costs $349, weighs 43 grams, comes in 23 colour and style options, and starts shipping on October 10 after preorders.
- The Gen 3 flagship starts at $449 with 12-MP cameras, 3K video capture, a six-microphone array and up to nine hours of battery, two more than the previous generation.
- The Meta VR Glasses ship in spring 2027 at $1,299, weigh 100 grams, run on a 5K micro-OLED display per eye and move the computing and battery to an attached puck.
- Zuckerberg said an upgraded Hearing Enhancement feature will turn Meta smart glasses into FDA-approved devices for mild to moderate hearing loss.
Why it matters
- Who has to decide decision Anyone buying for a team now picks a tier by what the assistant has to perceive: the Audio pair does everything the others do except capture images or video, so tasks that need Muse to look at something force the camera SKU.
- What doesn't add up contradiction Mashable put the Audio glasses at $249 and Wired at $349, so a buyer sizing a bulk order cannot tell whether the camera-free tier undercuts the Gen 3 by $100 or $200.
- What's now possible capability An FDA-approved hearing feature puts Meta frames in front of people shopping for hearing help rather than for an AI assistant, a buyer who was never in the smart glasses market.
- What it limits constraint The published accounts tie Muse to the Ray-Ban Gen 3 and the Audio pair only, so the $1,299 VR Glasses cannot yet be counted as part of the same assistant rollout.

Meta stock up more than 25% since Muse debut, with analysts citing AI-hardware strategyConfirmed2 publishers
Zuckerberg built his case for glasses on sight. "We think that glasses are going to be the biggest category because, first of all, they already are, and second, they are the only form factor that lets your Muse see what you see, hear what you hear, talk to you throughout the day, and display information right in your vision, eventually," he said during the keynote [14]. He also said 2 billion people already wear glasses [15]. The camera is the first item on that list. The pair Meta put on sale first does not have one [4].
What the wearer gets back for giving up image capture is modest and measurable. Wired reports 12 hours of battery on the Audio pair and up to 48 hours using the charging case [16]; the Gen 3 gets up to nine hours, two more than the generation before it [8]. Dropping the camera buys three more hours per charge [23]. Meta's own store listing for the Audio glasses reads: "Built without a camera and more powerful than headphones, ask your glasses to play music or answer questions on the go." [6]
On Wired's numbers, going camera-free takes $100 off the price [20]. Mashable reported the Audio glasses at $249, a hundred dollars below Wired's figure, which would double that discount [25][21]. Mashable also lists an entry-level Gen 3 Adventurer style at $249 and says it could not find those frames for sale [18]. The special edition aviator version of the Gen 3 is $579 [3].
For the person who has to get these past whoever writes the camera policy, the work is straightforward. List the tasks you want Muse for, then mark each one as something it can do by listening and something that needs it to look. Music, questions and calls sit on the listening side, and Meta says the Audio pair does all of that minus image and video capture [5]. Anything that depends on what is in front of the wearer needs the 12-MP camera in the Gen 3 [8].
The VR Glasses are a different purchase on a different calendar. Wired says they run the same software as Meta's Quest headsets, with the computing and the battery moved to an attached puck [10][11]. The Mashable and Wired accounts are silent on whether Muse runs on them [22]. So a pilot this quarter chooses between an assistant that only hears and one that also looks. The Audio pair is the cheaper one, and it is the one already shipping [24].
What to watch
- Whether the $249 Gen 3 Adventurer frames Mashable could not find actually go on sale, which would put a camera pair at the Audio pair's reported price.
- What Meta charges for the magnetic prescription lens inserts for the VR Glasses, which the company has not priced.
- Whether Hearing Enhancement's FDA-approved status covers the camera-free Audio pair or only the camera models.
