Microsoft's Nvidia-powered Surface Laptop Ultra will start at $2,599 when it ships October 16

Comparing the two machines on capability is harder than comparing them on price. At $5,999, the Dev Box costs about 2.3 times the laptop's $2,599 starting price ^[13]. PC Gamer's report gives the laptop's memory and Microsoft's model-size claim ^[15][5], but not the Dev Box's specifications. Until Microsoft publishes them, a buyer cannot convert that multiple into a cost per unit of capability.

Outside evidence on performance is thin so far, and it concerns games. PC Gamer refers to the "apparently RTX 5070-like gaming performance" of RTX Spark machines ^[7]. The local-model figure is Microsoft's. A capacity plan that assumes staff will run large models on the laptop rests on the vendor's number until someone else tests it.

PC Gamer's objection is to what Microsoft chose to emphasise. Its reviewer wrote that the charger claim "does little to dull the sting of that price tag" ^[10]. For a buyer with staff in Europe, the charger answers a compliance question. EU common charger rules, introduced in 2024 for portable devices, have covered laptops since April ^[11], and PC Gamer suggests the design may have been influenced by them ^[17]. Brett Ostrum, Microsoft's corporate vice president for Surface, wrote: "The included charging cable attaches magnetically to the right-side USB-C port and releases easily. The port remains fully functional for video, data, and other USB-C devices." ^[9] Apple's MagSafe uses a proprietary cable and Magnetic Connect does not, PC Gamer noted ^[16]. In my view that detail matters more to whoever stocks spare chargers for a fleet than to a reviewer.

The decision due this quarter is smaller than a refresh. Pre-orders are open now ^[14]. I'd expect the defensible sequence to be a small laptop pilot this quarter, sized to test the model-size claim on a team's own workloads, with the fleet order and the choice between laptop and desk box left to next quarter.
