Samsung Wallet to launch USDC transfers this month, with bank-payout fees still unpublished

Samsung will build USDC transfers into Samsung Wallet on 82 million US Galaxy phones from late October. Whether that reach becomes a cheap way to send money home depends on what Samsung charges to pay into foreign bank accounts.

What happened

  • Recipients in more than 60 countries can take local currency straight into a bank account without holding crypto, with fees that vary by destination.
  • Sends to compatible crypto wallets carry no Samsung transfer fee and are expected to settle in seconds.
  • Bastion, a licensed stablecoin custodian overseen by US regulators, runs the cross-border framework, with Coinbase as sub-custodian holding the USDC in Prime Vault.
  • Users need no separate crypto app or private keys, and USDC is the default dollar stablecoin under the wallet's Buy Stablecoin option.
  • Samsung is considering stablecoin payments in stores and says expansion beyond the US depends on local regulation.

Why it matters

  • What it limits constraint The zero-fee pitch helps only senders whose recipients already hold a compatible crypto wallet, and those recipients' wallets or exchanges can still take a cut.
  • Who's exposed exposure Coinbase is tied to the service's volume twice, as the sub-custodian holding the USDC and through Coinbase Ventures, which led Bastion's September 2025 round.
  • What it sets up precedent Cryptopolitan says the launch puts Samsung ahead of Apple Pay and Google Wallet, so Samsung's bank-payout price is likely to become the figure rival phone wallets are compared against.

The bank payout is the part of this launch that competes with remittance companies, or more precisely with what they charge: an average 6.36% on a $200 cross-border transfer, against a UN target of 3%, according to World Bank data cited by Cryptopolitan [13]. On $200 that is $12.72 in fees, against a target of $6 [15][16]. The gap is $6.72 a transfer [17].

The outcome turns on where Samsung sets its own price. Near $12.72, Samsung has put a crypto-wallet feature on 82 million devices and the remittance case comes down to convenience [1][15]. Under $6, it meets the UN target from an app Galaxy owners already open for cards, boarding passes and IDs [16][9]. The third outcome is a good price paired with 60-plus countries that miss the corridors US senders use most, in which case the device count overstates the market for the bank leg [3]. Samsung has not published the full country list [4].

"Sending money abroad should feel as convenient as using the wallet already on your phone," said Woncheol Chai, executive vice president and head of Samsung's Digital Wallet Team [7]. In my view the case for stablecoins as a mass-market way to send money abroad is half made here: the default wallet settles distribution, and the bank-payout price is still open. The counter-case is that convenience wins at incumbent prices, since senders already pay the 6.36% average [13]. If Samsung's bank payouts price above the World Bank average and volume grows anyway, that case is right and mine is wrong [13].

Samsung has left custody of the dollars to partners, and it holds a venture stake in one of them [6][14]. Samsung Next invested in Bastion's $14.6 million round in September 2025, alongside Sony Innovation Fund, a16z crypto and Hashed, and the round took Bastion's total funding past $40 million [14].

The partners' statements are about scale. Coinbase's head of infrastructure products, Alec Lovett, described Samsung's global reach as a significant distribution milestone for USDC [12]. "This level of adoption is what we built Solana for," said Lily Liu, president of the Solana Foundation [10]. The Foundation says Solana has processed more than $5.25 trillion in stablecoin volume so far in 2026 [11].

What to watch

  • Samsung's published fee for a $200 bank payout, set against the $12.72 World Bank average and the $6 UN target.
  • Usage figures from Samsung or Bastion after the late-October launch, the first evidence on whether convenience outweighs price.
  • Whether Samsung adds a second stablecoin, which would change USDC's position as the wallet's default.
