Samsung affiliates to invest $1 billion in KKR's Helix AI infrastructure venture
Six Samsung affiliates will put $1 billion into Helix, KKR's AI data center and power company. Four of the five business lines Samsung tied to the deal are data center construction, operations, cooling and backup power, so the stake is also a bid for Helix's orders.
The Investor · Invest desk

What happened
- Samsung Electronics is putting in $500 million, while Samsung C&T, SDS, SDI, Samsung Life and Samsung Fire & Marine split the other $500 million.
- Helix launched in June to develop and run hyperscale data centers along with power generation, transmission and distribution, and fiber-optic networks.
- The Samsung companies join KKR, Nvidia, US power company Vistra and the Kuwait Investment Authority as Helix's founding investors.
- Helix is led by Adam Selipsky, who was previously chief executive of Amazon Web Services.
Why it matters
- Who's exposed exposure Samsung's case for the check depends on its affiliates winning Helix work; if Helix buys construction, cooling and backup power elsewhere, the group holds only a minority equity stake.
- What it limits constraint With under a tenth of committed capital, Samsung cannot direct Helix's purchasing by ownership, so its units still have to win orders on terms the other founders accept.
- What's now possible capability Helix can now source power-facility construction and data center battery backup from companies inside its own investor group.

Samsung Electronics puts in half. The five other affiliates average $100 million each [13]. Two of those five are insurers, Samsung Life Insurance and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance [15]. The other four Samsung companies in the deal sell things a data center has to buy [6][7][8][9].
Samsung's account, as reported by Sedaily, sets out what each one brings. Samsung Electronics supplies chips from its DS division and is growing a cooling business through FläktGroup, the data center air-conditioning specialist it bought last year [6]. Samsung C&T does engineering, procurement and construction for data centers and power facilities [7]. Samsung SDS designs, builds and operates data centers [8]. Samsung SDI makes uninterruptible power supplies and battery backup units [9]. Samsung says it will use the stake to link those businesses with Helix's in search of synergies [11].
According to KKR, the Samsung money comes on top of more than $10 billion already committed to Helix [3]. One billion dollars over a base of at least $11 billion gives Samsung less than 9.1% of committed capital [17]. KKR itself has invested more than $75 billion across digital infrastructure and power, and about $9 billion in Korea since 2009 [14].
CNBC describes Helix's pitch as competing by building both the data centers and the power infrastructure underneath them [5]. Samsung's stake fits that pitch, because most of the business lines it named are plant and power equipment, with chips as one line in five [16]. That shows where Samsung wants to sell. It does not show that power is where the returns are. Helix's valuation, Samsung's ownership percentage, any capacity target and the split of the second $500 million among the five affiliates were not disclosed with the deal [1][2].
I see roughly three ways the check pays. Helix could hand its construction, cooling and backup-power work to Samsung's units [7][9]. In that case the equity is an entry fee, and the return shows up in affiliate revenue. The stake could earn an ordinary private infrastructure return, which is all the two insurers need from it [15]. Or Helix could buy from other vendors, and Samsung would hold a minority position with nothing to show for its synergy plan [17].
I think Samsung is paying for the first. It said the investment would deepen collaboration among the participating companies [12]. The counter-case is that the insurers may have written most of the second $500 million [2]. If they did, more of the check is portfolio money than the synergy language implies. The view is wrong if Helix's first projects hire other contractors for construction and battery backup [11].
What to watch
- Helix's first contract awards, and whether Samsung C&T, Samsung SDS, Samsung SDI or FläktGroup appear among the contractors.
- A breakdown of how the second $500 million divides between the two insurers and the three operating affiliates.
- The first Helix project to publish its power capacity and site, as a test of how much of the platform is generation and grid work.
