Samsung gives Qualcomm until mid-October to fix Galaxy S27 Ultra chip heat or consider Exynos
Samsung wants Qualcomm to fix chip overheating by mid-October or may use Exynos in the Galaxy S27 Ultra, Seoul Economic Daily reported. Samsung's mobile processor spending hit 13.8272 trillion won last year, though the Ultra's share is not public.

Samsung's spending on mobile application processors rose from 6.2116 trillion won in 2021 to 13.8272 trillion won last year.
| Measure | Value | As of | Claim |
|---|---|---|---|
| Processor spending, 2021 | 6.2116 trillion won | 11 | |
| Processor spending, last year | 13.8272 trillion won | 10 |
What happened
- Samsung's internal tests found the chip's temperature repeatedly exceeded threshold levels, and processing speeds dropped when heavy workloads continued.
- As of the report, the chip had not reached the thermal stability Samsung requires, and the two companies are still refining and retesting it.
- Samsung plans to check Qualcomm's progress by mid-month and then finalize its processor choice, with Galaxy S27 series mass production set for late this year.
- If the heat is not cleared, Samsung would have little choice but to consider the Exynos 2700, a System LSI design built on the foundry's 2-nanometer SF2P process.
Why it matters
- Who's exposed exposure Whatever Ultra volume moves to Exynos comes out of a Samsung processor budget that is now about 2.2 times its 2021 size.
- Who has to decide decision Samsung must pick the Ultra's processor while weighing heat, power and supply on both chips, and the need for an on-time production start limits how long it can wait.
- What doesn't add up contradiction The reason to leave Qualcomm is heat, yet the Exynos 2100 drew heat complaints in the S21 Ultra, so a switch helps only if the Exynos 2700 does better than that record.
- What's now possible capability An Exynos Ultra would give Samsung's chip units more volume and let the phone division trim outside processor spending, which gives Samsung reasons to keep the option open beyond this test.

Hot US inflation hit a Kospi whose 55 trillion won of chipmaker buybacks had wound downConfirmed4 publishers
Seoul Economic Daily built the report on unnamed industry sources who spoke on the 16th [5], so everything below carries that limit. The chip is Qualcomm's top-end part, unveiled last month [12], and Samsung had test results to hand back within the same month [17]. One industry official put the current position this way: "Both sides are working to resolve the overheating issue" [3].
In our view the Snapdragon stays in the Galaxy S27 Ultra more often than not, because the fallback has its own thermal record. The Exynos 2100 in the domestic S21 Ultra drew complaints over heat and performance degradation [6], and the report notes that Samsung must weigh heat, power consumption and supply timelines on the Exynos 2700 as well as on the Snapdragon [4]. The counter-thesis is not weak, though. An Exynos Ultra would let System LSI raise shipments, let the foundry lift utilization on its 2-nanometer lines and give the mobile experience business room to trim spending on outside processors [9].
Money is the second variable. Samsung's spending on mobile application processors was 13.8272 trillion won last year [10] against 6.2116 trillion won in 2021 [11], a rise of 7.6156 trillion won [16], or about 2.2 times [15]. That pool is not Qualcomm's alone. The report does not say how much of it goes to Qualcomm, how much the Ultra accounts for, or in which markets an Exynos Ultra would sell.
The market question matters because earlier Exynos Ultras were regional. The Exynos 2200 went into the S22 Ultra sold in Europe, and Qualcomm has supplied the Ultra worldwide since the S23 Ultra in 2023 [14]. Exynos also sits in the Korean S26 and S26+ this year, outside the Ultra tier [7]. If a return followed the 2022 pattern, Qualcomm would lose some markets on one model and the five-year gap would end [8].
The pass mark is sustained load. Throttling cuts operating speeds to protect the device, and the cost shows up in long gaming sessions or AI tasks, not in an instantaneous peak score [13]. Samsung is making AI features the core selling point of its next Galaxy phones [12], and mass production of the S27 series is set for late this year [18].
We would be wrong if Samsung confirms the Exynos 2700 for the Ultra. We would be wrong in a different way if the Snapdragon clears the retest and Samsung switches anyway, since the choice would then sit on the spending lines and not on heat.
What to watch
- Whether Samsung or Qualcomm confirms the result of the mid-October retest or names the processor for the Galaxy S27 Ultra.
- Whether any Exynos 2700 Ultra would sell in all markets or only some, as the Exynos 2100 and 2200 versions did.
- Any thermal results for the Exynos 2700 under the same sustained-load conditions that tripped the Snapdragon.
