Bitcoin ETFs' $3.1 billion nine-day streak turned their year's net flows positive

US spot Bitcoin ETFs have taken in about $3.1 billion over nine trading days, lifting their year-to-date net inflows to roughly $1 billion. Ether and Zcash funds slipped into small outflows after week-long inflow runs, in sums too small to show money leaving altcoins for Bitcoin.

What happened

  • The streak began Sept. 17, two days after Bitcoin funds lost $450.4 million, their largest one-day outflow since June 24, as the Clarity Act failed a 49-50 Senate vote.
  • Spot Ether ETFs had taken in more than $851 million over seven sessions before Tuesday, lifting their cumulative net inflows to about $14 billion.
  • Zcash ETFs ended a six-day inflow streak on Monday with $8 million of net outflows.
  • The rally lifted Bitcoin above the average ETF holder's $81,722 cost basis, putting that investor back in profit for the first time since January.

Why it matters

  • What doesn't add up contradiction Cointelegraph headlined Ether funds turning red while Decrypt, on SoSoValue data through Monday, called it a crypto ETF surge; the $11 million Ether and Zcash funds gave back between them favours Decrypt's reading.
  • Who's exposed exposure At Tuesday's price the average Bitcoin ETF holder is only about 2.3% above cost, so a fall of that size would put the typical fund investor back below cost.
  • What it limits constraint One outflow day the size of Sept. 15's $450.4 million would erase about 45% of the Bitcoin funds' year-to-date net inflows.

Take the roughly $3.1 billion streak [1] out of SoSoValue's year-to-date figure of about $1 billion [2] and the Bitcoin funds were about $2.1 billion in net outflows for the year before the run began [17]. Most of that swing came in one week, about $2.4 billion from Sept. 21 to Sept. 25 by Decrypt's count [4]. The two sessions since brought $31.07 million on Monday and $66.2 million on Tuesday [12][3]. Together they come to about 4% of the big week [18].

Ether's red day is small on its own scale. The roughly $3 million that left spot Ether funds on Tuesday [5] is about 0.35% of their seven-session intake [24]. For most of the Bitcoin streak, Ether funds were adding money too [6]. On the worst day before it, the two sold together: Ether ETFs lost $142.3 million on Sept. 15, the day of the Senate vote [11].

Bitcoin leads on dollars, or more precisely on raw dollars, since neither report scales the flows by fund size. Of the roughly $4.34 billion that went into Bitcoin, Ether, Solana and XRP funds over 30 days, Bitcoin took about 68% [27]. Within Bitcoin, Monday's net figure covered money moving between issuers. BlackRock's IBIT took in $54.84 million while Grayscale's GBTC lost $23.19 million and Fidelity's FBTC shed $10.90 million [13]. IBIT alone took in more than the category's $31.07 million net [26].

The next few sessions can go three ways. Both streaks could end on the same macro headline. The last nine-day Bitcoin run did, on Aug. 28, when $201.9 million left the funds after Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh spoke at Jackson Hole [15]. Bitcoin funds could keep adding while Ether funds keep losing money, and that second path is what a rotation would look like. Or both could keep taking in money at the smaller sizes of the past two days.

I'd expect the first. The breaks that both reports explain had outside causes, a Senate vote on Sept. 15 and a Fed chair's speech in August [10][15], and the one analyst quoted points to oil. "The rise in crude prices is capping non-yielding assets, so Bitcoin's rally has taken a bit of a pause," Kyle Rodda, senior financial market analyst at Capital.com, told Cointelegraph [20]. Rodda said Bitcoin could struggle to regain upward momentum while energy-price risks persist, though its technical picture remained "quite constructive" [21].

That view is wrong if Ether funds string together outflow days that take back a real share of their seven-session intake while the Bitcoin funds keep adding. Even then, the daily totals would show what ETF buyers prefer, not who they are. Cointelegraph's report links to a related story headlined "Bitcoin ETF inflows leave institutional demand unclear: CoinShares" [8].

What to watch

  • Whether Ether funds follow Tuesday's $3 million outflow with more red days while Bitcoin funds keep adding, the pattern a rotation out of altcoins would produce.
  • A tenth straight inflow day for Bitcoin ETFs would outlast the nine-day run that ended Aug. 28; an outflow day on crude or rate news would repeat how that run ended.
