XRP ETF holders sit $97 million below cost after 12 straight weeks of inflows

U.S. spot XRP ETFs stretched their inflow streak to 12 weeks on Oct. 6 yet held $97 million less than investors had put in, according to Sosovalue data. One overnight drop in XRP's price outweighed the day's $3.14 million net more than 20 times.

What happened

  • Bitwise's XRP ETF took in $10.55 million on Oct. 6, lifting its lifetime inflows to $688 million.
  • Franklin's XRPZ lost $4.07 million the same day, leaving its lifetime inflows at $501 million, while the remaining issuers shed about $3.34 million combined.
  • At about 02:00 UTC on Oct. 7, bitcoin fell under $84,000 in roughly 20 minutes and $412 million of mostly long crypto positions were liquidated within an hour.
  • Evernorth, the Ripple-backed XRP treasury company, expects its XRPN shares to begin trading around Oct. 12, giving institutions a second listed route into XRP.

Why it matters

  • What it limits constraint Because each new dollar adds equally to inflows and to assets, no run of weekly buying can close the funds' shortfall to cost; only a higher XRP price can.
  • Who's exposed exposure Each 1% move in XRP shifts fund assets by about $17 million, more than five times the Oct. 6 net, so holders' results depend on price far more than on new demand.
  • Who's exposed exposure Bitwise and Franklin hold about two-thirds of lifetime inflows between them, so the weekly streak turns on two funds whose flows ran in opposite directions on Oct. 6.

Cumulative inflows of $1.794 billion are a running total of dollars put into the funds less dollars taken out. The $1.697 billion of net assets is what those holdings were worth at the latest mark [10]. The shortfall is about 5.4% of the money invested [24]. Setting aside fees, a new dollar of inflow buys a dollar of XRP and adds the same amount to both totals. A redemption takes the same amount out of both. Flows leave the gap where it is, and XRP's price moves it [26]. September fits: the funds took in $121 million that month while their assets shrank [15].

Bitcoin.com News, which reported the Sosovalue figures, wrote that the gap narrowing by about $36 million in a few sessions was "a sign that both fresh money and the value of existing holdings moved in the right direction" [18]. Under that accounting, only the second half moves the gap. The $133 million shortfall four days earlier followed a $3.28 million outflow that coincided with a $37 million drop in assets [16]. The outflow came off both totals, so about $34 million of that drop was price [30].

The split on Oct. 6 was lopsided. Bitwise's day was about 3.4 times the group's net [20], because the other funds gave back about $7.41 million between them [21]. Over the funds' lives the money is less concentrated. Bitwise accounts for about 38% of cumulative inflows [22], and with Franklin the two account for about 66%, leaving roughly $605 million across every other issuer [23]. XRP and bitcoin were the only fund groups with net inflows that day, and bitcoin's $118.8 million was about 38 times XRP's [19][29].

Against $1.697 billion of assets, the Oct. 6 net was about 0.19% [27]. All of it was recorded before the sell-off [3]. The report puts XRP's overnight low at $1.46 in its text and $1.45 in its headline, down from $1.52 [5][4]. That is a fall of 3.9% to 4.6%. On paper it is worth roughly $67 million to $78 million of fund assets, or 21 to 25 times the day's net [17]. XRP was back around $1.47 at press time, and the report said the move likely erased much of the week's gain in asset value [11]. If the asset figure was struck near $1.52 and the funds hold only XRP, a $1.47 price takes about $56 million off it. That would leave the shortfall near $153 million, wider than the $133 million of four days before [25].

When XRPN starts trading [12], it could bring institutional money in alongside the ETFs, or it could draw the marginal buyer away from Bitwise, the fund that carried Oct. 6 [20]. A third outcome is that the listing matters less than XRP's price, which moves the funds' assets by about $17 million for every 1%, more than five times the Oct. 6 net [28]. I'd expect the third. The streak, now 12 weeks long [14], shows buyers arriving in small amounts, and the shortfall shows what the price has done to them. The counter-case is September's $121 million of buying while assets shrank [15]. Buyers who add on weakness could absorb a competing product without the weekly total turning negative. I'd drop the view if daily net flows start running at $17 million or more, the value of a 1% move in the price [28].

What to watch

  • Weekly XRP ETF flows for the week Evernorth's XRPN begins trading, and whether Bitwise again supplies more than the whole group's net.
  • Whether Franklin's XRPZ, the second-largest fund by lifetime inflows, follows its Oct. 6 outflow with further redemptions.
  • XRP against the $1.27 support level Bitcoin.com News flagged, about 13.6% below the $1.47 press-time price.
