Zcash's NU7 puts a tentative Nov. 5 deadline on ZEC left in Sprout

Zcash's NU7 upgrade, live on testnet since Oct. 4, will leave ZEC in the legacy Sprout pool unspendable if it reaches mainnet on its Nov. 5 target. Holders' real cutoff is a block height that developers plan to set at an Oct. 20 review.

What happened

  • NU7 cuts Zcash's target block spacing to 25 seconds from 75, so the network aims to produce about three blocks in the time it now takes to produce one.
  • Under the new fee rules, miners keep 40% of each transaction fee and the other 60% is pulled from circulation into a reserve for future mining rewards.
  • A coinholder poll covering nearly 2.4 million ZEC, about 66% of eligible balances, backed 25-second blocks by roughly 99.9%.
  • Both node programs support the trial, with Zakura releasing its implementation on Oct. 1 and the Zcash Foundation publishing a Zebra test version on Oct. 2.

Why it matters

  • What it limits constraint Wallet, exchange and node software still built on version 4 transactions has to be updated before mainnet activation, and the date it must meet stays provisional until the Oct. 20 height is set.
  • What it costs cost Miners fund the fee reserve, and with reissuance voted to begin in February 2031, fees withheld from a Nov. 5 activation wait about four and a quarter years before returning as block rewards.
  • Who has to decide decision Services choosing confirmation counts set how much of the speed-up their users see: keeping three confirmations cuts the targeted wait to about 75 seconds from 225, and any added confirmations give part of that back.

Testnet's activation block arrived about two days ahead of the roughly Oct. 6 date developers had estimated [2][25], and a mainnet height can drift from its intended date the same way. A Sprout holder who waits for the Oct. 20 decision and then plans around Nov. 5 has 16 days [6][22], and that is before allowing for any drift.

Spending from Sprout relies on version 4 transactions [4]. NU7 disables them at mainnet activation [3], and it introduces no new transaction formats [8]. Crypto.news and Cointelegraph both report that ZEC left in Sprout would become unspendable [3]. CoinDesk's wording is narrower: it writes that holders would need to move funds before activation "to retain the ability to spend them through the existing system" [7]. The reports do not say how much ZEC remains in Sprout, and they do not describe any way to recover it after activation.

The developers left the total supply alone. A day has room for 1,152 blocks at the current spacing and 3,456 under NU7 [27]. With the per-block reward cut to one-third [15], the faster chain pays the same daily subsidy as the slower one [28]. The halving schedule also stays, backed by about 98.9% of the coins polled [19].

The testnet will go through a supply event of its own before the review. Its adjusted third halving is set at block 4,497,948 [20], which is 32,922 blocks after activation. At the 25-second target those blocks take about nine and a half days to mine, putting the halving around Oct. 14, six days before developers decide [29]. CoinDesk notes that actual block times vary [16].

Oct. 20 can go three ways. If developers set a height consistent with Nov. 5, Sprout holders get their 16 days [22]. If testing turns up a fault in the fee rules, or in the new limits on shielded actions meant to protect wallets from spam as blocks come faster [23], the height moves out and holders get more time. Or developers aim a height at Nov. 5 and it lands days away, as the testnet's did [25].

I'd expect the first. The Zcash Foundation, Project Tachyon, Valar Group, ZODL and Shielded Labs agreed the scope unanimously after polling coinholders [21]. The foundation also told testnet operators to run its release candidate and test NU7 "under real conditions" [14]. The case against is that testnet is the first live environment for these changes [18], and mainnet operators have been told they need not change anything yet [11]. If the Oct. 20 review sets a height that implies a date well after Nov. 5, or sets no height at all, the schedule was softer than that agreement suggested.

What to watch

  • The mainnet activation height set at the Oct. 20 review, and the calendar date it implies against the Nov. 5 target.
  • Any published figure for ZEC still held in Sprout, or migration notices from wallets and exchanges ahead of activation.
