ECB's Pontes settles tokenised assets in central bank money eight hours a day
Thirteen banks including Deutsche Bank and Santander went live on September 21 with four ledger operators, and the ECB will put part of its own 23 billion euro portfolio into tokenised public sector debt.

What happened
- The European Central Bank switched on Pontes on September 21, 2026, letting banks settle tokenised asset transactions in a wholesale digital euro across distributed ledger infrastructure.
- Thirteen banks are live on the platform from the first day, Deutsche Bank and Santander among them.
- Four DLT operators are connected alongside the banks, including Deutsche Boerse-owned Clearstream.
- Pontes runs on business days from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. CET, bridging privately run blockchain platforms with the ECB's existing TARGET payment services.
Why it matters
- What it limits constraint Final settlement in central bank money is reachable 40 hours of the week's 168, so a tokenised trade struck at 5 p.m. CET or on a Saturday has to wait for the next window.
- What's now possible capability A bank settling on Pontes holds a claim on the ECB instead of on a settlement bank, so a tokenised bond delivery no longer depends on an intermediary's balance sheet.
- Who's exposed exposure The ECB becomes a holder of tokenised securities settled on infrastructure it runs itself, putting its own portfolio behind the platform's operational record.

A settlement in central bank liabilities leaves the buyer holding a claim on the ECB. In commercial bank money the claim is on the intermediary bank [7]. ECB Executive Board member Piero Cipollone framed the launch on that point, describing Pontes as introducing "stability and trust" through central bank money into tokenised finance [9].
The production cohort is smaller than the test cohort. In the 2024 trials, more than 64 participants settled nearly 1.6 billion euros in central bank money, which at 64 participants is an average of about 25 million euros each [10][16]. Thirteen banks are live, roughly a fifth of that group [2][14]. A trial costs a pilot team; staying connected through the business day costs operations staff. The ECB describes the infrastructure as permanent rather than experimental [4].
The ECB will also be buying. It said it will put a small portion of its own 23 billion euro portfolio into euro-denominated tokenised public sector and supranational securities and settle them on Pontes [5]. One percent of that portfolio is 230 million euros [17]. Set against the nearly 1.6 billion euros the 2024 trials moved, 230 million is about 14 percent [18].
Pontes is a wholesale platform for banks and financial institutions [8]. The retail digital euro is still in its legislative phase, with a pilot on a beta version without legal tender status scheduled for the second half of 2027 [12].
Appia, the wider ECB plan that Pontes feeds, targets roughly 2028 for a more integrated tokenised financial ecosystem across Europe [11]. In my view the ECB's own purchases will be the largest single identifiable source of Pontes volume while the platform's day stops at 4 p.m. CET [6], because the 13 banks have somewhere else to settle the rest of the week. The counter-thesis: Clearstream is one of the four connected operators [3], and one tokenised sovereign or supranational issue settled through it could move more in a day than the trials did in total [10]. Crypto Briefing called this the ECB shipping a product on time [13], though the article does not print the target date it is measured against. I would be wrong if bank-to-bank settlement on Pontes exceeds the ECB's own allocation in the first months, and Clearstream's issuance pipe is the reason that is possible.
What to watch
- Any extension of the 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. CET settlement day, or weekend operation, on Pontes.
- Disclosure of how much of the 23 billion euro portfolio the ECB actually allocates to tokenised securities.
- Whether banks that took part in the 2024 trials but stayed out of the live launch connect later.

Pontes operates during business days from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. CET, bridging privately run blockchain platforms with the ECB's existing TARGET payment services.

Pontes allows settlements to happen in central bank liabilities rather than commercial bank money; a transaction settled in central bank money carries the credit risk of the central bank, while commercial bank money carries the credit risk of the intermediary bank.
- [8]
Pontes is a wholesale platform, meaning it serves banks and financial institutions.
- [9]
ECB Executive Board member Piero Cipollone framed the launch around Pontes introducing "stability and trust" through central bank money into the evolving tokenized finance landscape.
- [10]
During 2024 trials, over 64 participants engaged in nearly 1.6 billion euros worth of central bank money settlements.
- [11]
Pontes fits into a broader ECB strategic initiative called Appia, which aims to build a more integrated tokenized financial ecosystem across Europe by roughly 2028.
- [12]
The retail digital euro remains in its legislative phase, with a pilot using a beta version without legal tender status scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027, and first issuance targeted by 2029.
- [13]
Crypto Briefing wrote that the ECB "quietly did something that central banks rarely do: ship a product on time."
- [14]
The 13 banks live on Pontes are about a fifth of the more than 64 participants in the 2024 trials (13 / 64 = 20 percent).
- [15]
An 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. CET window is 8 hours, so across five business days Pontes is open 40 hours of the week's 168, leaving 128 hours when no settlement in central bank money is available on it.
- [16]
Nearly 1.6 billion euros of 2024 trial settlements spread across 64 participants is an average of about 25 million euros each.
- [17]
One percent of the ECB's 23 billion euro portfolio is 230 million euros.
- [18]
230 million euros is about 14 percent of the nearly 1.6 billion euros settled in the 2024 trials.
