Polymarket puts an IPO and a token on the table as valuation talks pass $20 billion

Polymarket is weighing an IPO and a native token as routes to capital, Bloomberg reported, with valuation talks reportedly above $20 billion. Its spending so far points toward equity, and neither route has a timetable.

Polymarket's valuation rose in two steps from 2025 Polymarket's valuation of about $9 billion in 2025, then the rise to about $15 billion and the rise from there to above $20 billion.

Three figures: Polymarket valued at about $9 billion in 2025; a rise of roughly 67% from about $9 billion to about $15 billion; a further rise of at least 33% from about $15 billion to above $20 billion.

What happened

  • Polymarket has not formally announced an IPO or a token issuance, and no timetable has been disclosed, according to The Paypers' account of the Bloomberg report.
  • Over one recent weekend Polymarket reportedly generated about $9.9 million in revenue, against roughly $2.64 million for Hyperliquid.
  • Polymarket acquired QCEX to operate under CFTC oversight, launched Polymarket US and hired senior executives from traditional finance.

Why it matters

  • What it sets up precedent The reports place a dual route alongside crypto companies that already use both equity and on-chain capital; that comparison set includes no prediction market, so a sector precedent is not shown.
  • Who has to decide decision Crypto Briefing puts the choice as which asset supporters and backers eventually hold: shares in a listed company or a token tied to platform functions. The company could choose both.
  • Who's exposed exposure Today's $20 billion is a negotiated figure. A listing or a traded token would replace it with a quoted price, tested against revenue reported only as well above $1 billion.

Blockchain.com is one of 12 firms seeking a CFTC exchange licence in 2026

Intercontinental Exchange's strategic investment put Polymarket at about $9 billion in 2025 [17], and an April 2026 round lifted it to about $15 billion [18], a rise of 67% [14]. The August talks, reported above $20 billion [19], would add another 33% [15], so the figure would have more than doubled across three marks [16]. Thepaypers.com calls the August figure market speculation [19], and the round has not been reported as closed.

Revenue offers a check on the price. Annualised revenue is reported as well above $1 billion [6], so $20 billion is under 20 times run-rate revenue [20]. Because the reports do not include an exact revenue figure, 20 times is an upper bound. The weekend comparison with Hyperliquid works out to 3.75 times [13], but it covers one weekend.

On where the effort has gone, we think the equity path is the one Polymarket has been building. It bought QCEX to operate under the CFTC, launched Polymarket US and hired senior executives from traditional finance [8]. Crypto Briefing adds that a regulated US entity, a CFTC-linked acquisition, Wall Street hires and a stock exchange operator on the cap table "all fit a public-market narrative" [12]. The token side has one phrase: chief executive Shayne Coplan spoke of exploring an "onchain asset with real programmable utility" [4], and he shared no specifics or launch timeline [5]. As far as the reports show, nothing comparable to the QCEX purchase exists on the token side.

The counter-thesis sits in the same reports. The two options are not mutually exclusive, and Polymarket could list shares while also introducing a separate on-chain asset [3]. The company has said it "has not announced any plans for an airdrop or a token generation event" [11]. The hires are only "widely interpreted" as listing preparation [8], and Polymarket has not said that is what they are.

We would be wrong on sequencing if a token generation event or airdrop were announced before any banker hire or filing appeared. We would also be wrong on the whole reading if the next priced round came in below the April figure of about $15 billion [18].

What to watch

  • A formal Polymarket statement on a token or airdrop, or concrete details of the onchain asset Coplan described.
  • Filings or banker hires that would put a timetable on an IPO.
  • A closed round above $20 billion, or a priced round below the April figure of about $15 billion.
