Bitcoin's squeeze high stopped $409 short of the average ETF buyer's cost

Forced closures of bearish bets, counted at $648 million by Crypto Briefing and above $600 million by CoinGlass, carried bitcoin to its highest price since January. Glassnode puts the US spot ETF cohort's average entry at $85,638.

What happened

  • Bitcoin rose as high as $85,229 on Monday, its highest since late January, and traded at $84,256 around 06:35 a.m. ET, up about 3.8%, according to CoinMetrics data cited by CNBC.
  • Glassnode had flagged the $83,000 to $86,000 range as a likely acceleration zone before the move, because a dense cluster of short positions had built up inside it.
  • Rekt Capital warned of a bearish divergence on the daily RSI, where lower indicator highs met higher price highs, and said that signals a lack of momentum behind the highs.

Why it matters

  • Who's exposed exposure The average US spot ETF buyer is still under water at $85,638, so a sustained trade above that line hands a break-even exit to everyone who bought near the top, and that is where fresh supply becomes cheap to release.
  • Who has to decide decision BTIG's frame, with $75,000 holding and $90,000 as the target, prices about 6.8% upside against 11% downside from Monday's $84,256. Leverage sizing on a long follows from that ratio, not from the headline high.
  • What it limits constraint The cluster of positions that produced the squeeze now sits beneath the price, and Crypto Briefing notes the same sensitivity amplifies a decline if bitcoin falls back into $83,000 to $86,000.
  • What doesn't add up contradiction Crypto Briefing calls billions of net ETF inflows across August and mid-September a structural floor, while Friday's $435 million being the largest day since Sept. 3 means no day in between cleared that bar.

Of the $648 million of short positions Crypto Briefing counted as liquidated on the way up, more than $262 million went in the single hour bitcoin approached $84,000 [4][10], about 40% of the day's forced closures inside sixty minutes [29]. Cointelegraph, citing CoinGlass, puts the cross-crypto 24-hour total above $600 million [2]. That one hour was bigger than the $159 million of net crypto ETF inflows recorded across all of Thursday [7], the day after the Senate blocked the CLARITY Act and the SEC and CFTC moved ahead with crypto policies of their own [5][31].

The intraday high, $85,229 on CoinMetrics data [6], stopped $409 below the $85,638 cost basis Glassnode gives for US spot bitcoin ETF investors [35][39]. At $84,256, where bitcoin traded around 06:35 a.m. ET on Monday, that cohort sits about 1.6% under its average entry [6][40]. Corporate treasuries, cost basis near $80,500, are up about 4.7% [19][30].

The weekly chart had already turned. Bitcoin closed last week at $81,120, its highest weekly close since the week of May 4 [9], and Crypto Briefing reports the week before the $85,000 print delivered the first weekly close above its 50-week moving average in 45 weeks [11]. It has reclaimed the 50-week EMA at $77,769 [8]. Monday's move cleared the May local high of $82,950 [22].

Rekt Capital, quoted by Cointelegraph, warned that lower highs on the daily RSI against higher highs in price show a lack of underlying momentum and raise the risk of a sudden reversal [17]. The daily RSI is approaching the overbought reading of 70 [18]. Last week the same analyst described bitcoin as facing a "moment of truth" as it coiled below the May high [23].

Matt Hougan, chief investment officer at Bitwise, reads it the other way. "I do think it's over, it's crypto spring, the crocuses are blooming," he told CNBC's "Squawk Box Europe" on Monday [34]. He said the AI boom had "sucked all the oxygen out of the room" and that momentum money is now rotating back into crypto [37]. Bitcoin is up nearly 35% over three months and still down for the year [16], roughly 33% below the October 2025 record above $126,000 [15][25].

Friday's $435 million of net US ETF inflows was the largest daily tally since Sept. 3, according to Farside Investors [12], and Fidelity's FBTC took $310 million of it, about 71%, with BlackRock's IBIT out of the lead for once [24][33]. "The key change is therefore not simply positive ETF activity, but a clear redistribution of flow leadership: IBIT went from dominating FBTC by nearly six times on September 3 to FBTC recording almost three times IBIT's holdings netflow on September 18," CryptoQuant wrote in a blog post [26].

In my view $85,638 caps this attempt, because the squeeze consumed the positions that were funding the advance and Monday's tape shows no spot bid paying up through the ETF cohort's entry. If net inflows hold at or above Friday's $435 million a day for a week while price trades above $85,638, that view is wrong [12][35].

What to watch

  • Daily US spot ETF net flows, and whether FBTC keeps leading IBIT after the Sept. 18 switch in flow composition.
  • Whether aged coins start moving as long-term holders see prices last seen near a prior peak.
  • Federal Reserve rate decisions and the SEC and CFTC rulemaking that now stands in for the blocked CLARITY Act.
