Bitcoin gains 0.9% after August core PCE comes in at 3.0% against 3.3% expected
Bitcoin rose 0.9% to $84,376 after August core PCE came in at 3.0%, below the 3.3% economists expected. Lower odds of an October Fed hike did little for a market whose September rally ran on ETF inflows that have since faded.

What happened
- CME's FedWatch tool now shows a 62% chance the Fed holds rates in October and a 37% chance of a quarter-point hike.
- Over the past week, Bitcoin has bounced in a tight band between roughly $82,600 and $85,600.
- Stocks slipped on the day, with the S&P 500 down 0.2% at 7,670.84, the Dow off 0.3% and the Nasdaq down 0.1%.
Why it matters
- What doesn't add up contradiction Decrypt gives October hike odds as 34.9% in its summary and 37% in its body, and gives no pre-release figure for either, so the report cannot show how far the PCE miss moved Fed pricing.
- Who's exposed exposure Buyers at September's $87,354 peak are about 3.4% under water, and a retest of the 50-day average would take that loss to roughly 11%.
- Who has to decide decision Adding to Bitcoin now is a bet that ETF inflows return to their September pace, because better inflation news on its own did not lift the price out of its range.

Bitcoin's rebound stalls at $83,000, the average price its ETF holders paidConfirmed4 publishers
Most of the reaction came and went inside one daily candle. Bitcoin opened at $83,624.30, touched $85,598.94 and was at $84,376.09 when Decrypt reported the move [4]. By then sellers had handed back $1,222.85 of a $1,974.64 climb, about 62% of it [10]. What set off the climb was a miss of three-tenths of a point on both the core and headline annual rates [9], with core up 0.2% on the month against 0.3% forecast [2].
Core inflation at 3.0% is still well above the Fed's 2% target [13]. On Tuesday the 10-year Treasury yield hit around 5.25%, its highest since 2002 [8]. So the 10-year pays about 2.25 points more than trailing core inflation [22], and a buyer of Bitcoin gives that up. The relief in futures is also narrow. The two outcomes FedWatch prices, a hold and a hike, leave about one point of probability for anything else, a cut included [11].
September's rally had other buyers. Bitcoin dipped below $75,000 in mid-September. Then came the biggest ETF inflow day of 2026, on September 21, and a wave of short liquidations that carried it to $87,354, its highest since January [6]. From the $75,000 line, the run gained more than 16% [12]. Inflows have faded since their $2.4 billion week, according to Decrypt [27]. The report did not give a figure for the most recent days.
Three paths fit the chart. The trend resumes: Decrypt's technical reading wants daily closes above $85,599, and ideally above $87,354 [7], and an RSI of 63.4 leaves room before profit-taking usually starts [19]. The range holds: an ADX of 41.9 still signals a strong trend, but the indicator lags and can stay high while price goes sideways [17]. Or price retests the 50-day moving average at $77,809.88, which traders often expect after a stretch of about 8% above it [18]. That retest would mean a fall of about 7.8% from $84,376.09 [23].
I think the range holds, or more precisely, that breaking it needs a buyer the inflation data did not supply. The buyers behind September's run were ETF allocators and short sellers forced to cover [6], and a 0.3-point miss changes neither of them on the day. Some of the Fed relief was also in the price already: Decrypt reported that hike bets had been fading before the release [26]. The counter-case is Decrypt's own. Lower rates tend to add liquidity and pull money into assets like Bitcoin [30], and that effect builds over months. A daily close above $87,354 while ETF inflows stay below their September pace would prove me wrong.
Myriad is the prediction market built by Dastan, Decrypt's parent company. Its traders put near-even odds on the short term: 49% that Bitcoin stays above $84,000, and 21% that it clears $86,000 by Monday [16]. A new record above $126,199.63 would need a gain of about 49.6% from $84,376.09 [24]. Decrypt puts the window for that at about three months [21].
What to watch
- FedWatch's October hike probability into the meeting, measured against the 34.9% to 37% area Decrypt reported after the release.
- Whether the 10-year Treasury yield stays near its 5.25% high, which sets what cash and bonds pay against a coin with no yield.
- Brent crude, which briefly topped $100 on Monday on Hormuz disruption, as an input to the September PCE print.
